Ruby Wilson Dean was the wife of a second cousin (twice removed), Wyman Wesley Dean. I had no idea the first woman shoemaker in the US came from Iowa:
Ruby I. Dean, 85, [of] Sioux City, Iowa, died Friday, November 3, 1995, at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Berkemier Funeral Home with the Reverend Grady Bluford officiating. The body was cremated and there will be no visitation.
Mrs. Dean was born October 30, 1910, in Grey, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Nellie (Duvall) Wilson. She married Wyman Dean. They made their home in Sioux City. He died in 1988. She was the first woman shoemaker in the United States and operated a shoe shop in Cecelia Park in Sioux City. She later was a licensed insurance agent with Farm Bureau. She operated the first alcoholic halfway house for women in Sioux City.
Survivors include a son; six sisters and five brothers.
