Elsie Walker |
Elsie was the eldest child of Samuel Nathaniel Walker, born to him and his first wife, Hattie Mae Moyers. When I was little, Elsie came to visit us once. Naïve child that I was, I took a deck of cards over to where she was sitting and asked her to play slapjack with me. After all, she looked almost bored or lonely sitting in that chair (Elsie didn't really do anything except sit in a chair in the living room whenever she visited us). Elsie declined to play cards. Then my mom royally reprimanded me for getting the cards out and for daring to ask my aunt to play. "Don't take the cards over by Elsie!" she said. Card playing was against Elsie's religion. The reaction my mother had when this incident happened just served to reinforce one thing I believed when I was about three years old. Elsie was scary. Isn't it ironic that for most of the Walkers card playing during family get-togethers and the like almost was a religion? I received a letter from Elsie in 1970 when I graduated from high school. |
