The Walker Tour

New London Main Street, West to East View

Photo Date: 1962

New London, Iowa, Main Street, West to East View

This view of Main Street in New London was scanned from a 1962 New London High School Tiger yearbook. It shows the town's business district in the opposite direction from the 1961 photograph which preceded this page in the Tour.

On the right side of the street (South) where the "Eat" sign is located is a small restaurant that was owned by Cliff and Marguerite Walker in the early 1950s. The building the restaurant was in was torn down along with another one or two in the mid 1960s, and a larger "Department" store called Burkhardt's (actually an expanded store from an earlier incarnation) replaced it. Shores Drug Store, on the north side (right side) of the street, is going out of business this year (2001). The building closest to the field of view on the left (North side) was the old town post office until 1962-1963 (the next photograph in this sequence shows the new post office being built).

Larry Fane, NLHS class of '59, has added the following memory regarding Cliff Walker's restaurant:

Comments
Cliff's Restaurant was also used as a bus stop for a time if I recall.
