![]() From the New London Journal Centennial Edition: 1875-1975: D. W. Brown's family came from Ireland. His grandfather served in the War of 1812; his father came from Pennsylvania to Ohio, then to Iowa. David W. Brown (1865-1943) was born at Birmingham, Iowa, the son of John G. and Sarah Walker Brown. He worked as a telegraph operator for the railroad in Santa Fe, New Mexico, then clerked in grocery stores in Cantril and Bonaparte, before coming to New London in 1897. Here he operated a grocery store until his retirement in 1941. D. W. Brown married Margaret E. Moore (1869-1942) who was also born in Birmingham. Their children were Walter (1900-1967), Luella (Mrs. Roy) Fleenor, Craig, Marjorie (1907-1971) who was a nurse for forty years, and Ruth (Brs. Byron) Toft. Mrs. D. W. Brown was the first president of the M. E. Ladies Aid in New London. Ruth DeLong Peterson
