Because Dad (Bill Brumm)'s face was hidden by the bar on the "incline train" in this shot (they warned us!, they warned us!), I (Dennis Brumm)felt that we got cheated when the picture was taken. Dad more than made up for it later, though (see next picture). There were fun little chipmunks running around the area at the top of this Incline. It was the best way to get to the top of the mountain. In fact, immediately upon arriving in Manitou Springs in 1958 to visit the former Iowans Cliff, Marguerite, and Doris Walker; and Wilda, and Terry Thomas, I was led astray by my cousin Terry as we climbed Flag Mountain directly behind the hamburger joint that Cliff and Marguerite owned and ran. Actually Terry climbed Flag Mountain. I got stuck between the ground and the first place that traffic could come by where I would could be fetched and saved. Looking down, I could not go down. Looking up, I couldn't get up the mountain. I figured I would die on the mountain or fall off, but at the last minute the organized rescue did save me. I do not climb mountains to this day, and honestly don't even like standing on ladders. The Walkers - the 1960s |
