Sarah Catherine [Hardin] Lee
| William Lee |
Sarah Catherine Hardin was the daughter of Prudence Walker and William Hardin. Her mother, the daughter of George and Julia Ann Walker, is shown in an earlier page in the Tour. There is also a photograph of her brother, John Wesley Hardin, which is the next in this series of photographs, and several letters written home to relatives by him during the Civil War. The George Walker family had moved from Tennessee to Wayne County, Indiana at some point around 1820, and Sarah's mother Prudence, George's daughter, married William Hardin there in 1825. Sometime between 1836 - 1840 the Hardins moved their family to Henry County, Iowa, and Sarah was born in the Hawkeye state in 1842. The 1850 census lists her father's farm as having a value of $3200, which was considerable in comparison to many of the farms of the day in that census. On March 30, 1862 Sarah married William Lee, the son of John Lee of Ohio and Charity [Smith] Lee of Illinois. Sarah and William had four children. (or more; perhaps four others died in childhood). William eventually became the president of the first bank in New London, Iowa, which was founded in 1890. (In a related twist of fate, William Lee's brother, Samuel Lee, married Sarah Hardin's cousin, Mary Jane Leas ("Versey"), the daughter of Jane [Walker] Leas and Thomas Chapman Leas.) In 1907 the Lee family moved to Los Angeles, California. Sarah and William both died in 1916. She is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles. |
