This photograph was published in the 1974 New London Journal Centennial Edition. Its caption read: LADIES' GYMNASIUM CLASS about 1907. The NEW LONDON FARMER-TIMES of February 22, 1907 carried the announcement of a Gymnasium Exhibition at the Opera House. "All winter a class of ladies under the leadership of Mrs. Charles B. Lundgren has met." There were thirty-three enrolled in the class, which had drilled, done marching exercises, free movements, wand work, military marching, races, and played centre ball. Accompanying them on the piano was Nelle Brock, who had recently been married to Sam Williams. We have the following identification of the ladies in this picture: Back row: Elizabeth Parriott, Edna Breneman, Vera Parrott, Ruby Kassell, Mae Miller, Nora Van Ausdall, Estelle Rose Harrell, Clara Magers, Ella Lynn Ogg, Alta Schryer Drewer, Mary Wallar Rauscher, Gladys Redfearn Chapman, Anna Miller, Mayme Jackman, and Grace Pierson Moore. Front row: Stella Enslow, Clara Alexander, Mrs. Gertrude Lundgren, Nelle Jacobs Clark, Laura Lee Dohrman, Grace Hilleary, Grace Mehler, Kineta Portlock, Anna Johnson, and Edna Weller. Laura Lee Dohrman was the daughter of Green Lee and Sarah Jane Jenny Stafford. Her father was the son of Samuel Lee and his first wife, Louisa Burge; Green's step mother, Samuel's second wife, was Mary Jane Leas, the daughter of Jane Walker and Thomas Chapman Leas. Laura Lee was born in 1888 and died in 1918 (perhaps from the Spanish flu?). |
