Margretta Umphrey was probably the last of Maude and Roy Fortner's family to move from Iowa to Michigan in the late 1930s/early 1940s. In fact, after the rest of her family moved to Winterset, Iowa, not so long after her father died in 1931, she evidently remained in New London, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1938. She may have stayed with Cliff and Marguerite Walker during those last years in New London. |
