Maude and Roy Fortner met in Southeast Iowa, were married in 1932, lived for a time in Winterset (Mahaska County), Iowa, then moved to Detroit in about 1940 and lived in Michigan until about 1964 or 1965. At that time Roy's two sisters died (one may have been his mother, if his own theory about his family and his own adoption was correct). Maude and Roy then moved into the house of Roy's "sisters" in Knoxville, Iowa (Marion County), where they lived until he died in 1968. I always enjoyed visiting them in Knoxville. Up the street several blocks was the town square, and there was a record store in the basement of a business building where I spent many enjoyable hours shopping for the few 45 RPM records I could afford with my allowance. |
