Comments
"This is Henry Cowles. He was a neighbor and friend of ours when we lived on the Walker homestead east of Morning Sun. He will celebrate his 90th birthday with an open house this Saturday (May 5, 2001)."

(Henry was apparently born in the year between Samuel Clinton and Leota Walker.)

Though not a family member, since his photograph is in the Walker Tour, it should be noted that Henry has died since this was originally posted.

His obituary was in the May 30, 2002 Morning Sun News-Herald and the Wapello Republican. It is provided below:

Henry Eugene Cowles, 91, Wapello, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, May 22, 2002, at the Great River Methodist Center, West Burlington, Iowa. The son of Nelson Eugene and Anna Seitz Cowles, he was born May 3, 1911, at Wapello. He married Irene Martha McCulley on March 25, 1933, at Rock Island, Ill. She preceded him to death on Sep 22, 1973.

Henry loved his farming and as of February 2002 his farm is included as an Iowa Century Family Farm. In his later years he has enjoyed working or creating in his shop. He was an avid supporter of fire and rescue personnel. He enjoyed his family, especially the grandchildren and their families. His horses and dogs were special to him and he enjoyed hunting.

He was a member of the Izaak Walton League.

He is survived by two daughters, Betty and John Ball of Mediapolis and Doris and Lee Harris of Morning Sun; three sons, Warren and and Judy Cowles of Northbrook, Ill., Nelson and Leah Cowles of Morning Sun, and Robert and Cathy Cowles of Wapello; a sister, Bertha Adams of Acton, California; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-six grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a special friend, Melvine Graham of Burlington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene; two sisters; Nellie French and Edith Cowles; two brothers, Joseph and an infant brother; one grandson, Kurt Cowles, and a great-granddaughter, Christina Cowles.

The funeral service for Henry Cowles was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with the Rev. Richard Shaw officiating. Music was provided by Kathleen Hagele as organist and Kent Anderson, vocalist, singing 'In The Garden'. Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery, Wapello. The pallbearers included Keith Ball, Chris Ball, Michael Ball, Dan Harris, Doug Harris, Craig Cowles, David Cowles and Brandon Cowles. Honorary bearers were Barbara Anderson, Nancy McLaughlin, Carol Eno, Emily Cowles and Bethany Hinkle.

Visitaion was Monday at the funeral home where the family met with friends in the evening.
