The Great River Bridge at Burlington, June, 2001

Thanks to Becky Murphy and Marge Kimble for this Photograph
Burlington Iowa's, Great River Bridge

The Great River Bridge was built in the early 1990s at Burlington, connecting Iowa with the state of Illinois via US Highway 34. The old bridge, the MacArthur Bridge, had become terrifying to cross and completely inadequate.

When I was a child my father told me that when the (previous bridge) MacArthur Bridge was under construction some divers working on it refused to return to the depths of the Mississippi after having seen the size of some of the fish that lived there.
