Wallace Broeker
Wallace E. "Wally" Broeker, 86, of Wapello, formerly of Morning Sun, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Wapello Nursing & Care Center.
Born Aug. 5, 1911, near Morning Sun, he was the son of William and Mary Teager Broeker. He married Ruth R. Walker in August 1932 in Illinois. She died in March 1939. He then married Ruth A. Wheeler in February 1941 in Davenport. She died in March 1987.
Mr. Broeker was a lifelong farmer. He was raised in rural Des Moines County and attended the Rock Bottom country school and graduated from Morning Sun High School.
He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church at Morning Sun, where he served as a trustee for many years. He also served as a trustee for Yellow Spring Township.
Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Marshall of DeWitt and Shirley Smith of Wapello; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville Broeker of Morning Sun; and one sister, Leora Palmer of Columbia, Mo.
Besides both wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Morning Sun, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Broeker will be will be at 1030 a.m. Monday at First United Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Jack Edmisson and Jerry Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun.
A memorial has been established for various community landscape plantings by the family.
