The Giertz family lived in Joliet, Will County, Illinois by at least 1912 if not earlier, as in 1912 Henry worked as a clerk for the L. F. Beach Company in that city and his family lived at 225 Willow Way. Living with the Giertz family was Lillian's grandfather, Sam N. Moyers (his wife, Lucinda, had died in 1909; by 1910 Sam had moved out of Des Moines County to Illinois). In 1914 Henry and family were living at 404 Hunter Avenue, and Sam was still with them. But in 1915 Sam is not mentioned, though he probably was there at least until the end of 1916. Henry had become a grocer, and his family lived at 611 Willcox in Joliet in 1915. Margaret Giertz, Henry and Lillian's daughter, who was born in about 1906, sent a postcard to her cousin Frances Willard Moyers in Iowa, November 29, 1916, and in that card she said, "Grandpa leaves for Iowa tomorrow. We will be very lonesome without him. I hope you are well and will enjoy your Thanksgiving. Margaret Giertz."

By 1920, when his business was at 608 Taylor in Joliet, Margaret is known to have begun high school according to information found on the back of another greeting card she sent back to her cousin in Iowa. In 1921 Henry Giertz was in the Joliet City Directory listed as the superintendent of L. F. Beach Company, boarding at 610 Taylor. He was not listed in the 1923 directory, but in 1925 he was the building superintendent for the building next door to his 1921 residence, 612 Taylor Street.
