![]() The April 11, 1930, ad on top of the page for sheet metal workers may have been what was influencing several Walker boys to move to the Quad Cities [Davenport, Bettendorf, Iowa; Rock Island, Moline, Illinois - region is about 75-100 miles north of Louisa County, Iowa] for work. The picnic was later that year, October 5.
Text of this newspaper blurb: A picnic was held at the home of Thomas Walker Sunday, October 5 [1930]. Those who enjoyed the affair were: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ogden, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Marston, Mr. and Mrs. Orin Pierce, Burlington; Mr. and Mrs. George Walker, and daughters, Vera and Mazie, Mr. and Mrs. Geoffrey Umphrey and children, Thelma and Margretta, and Thomas and Paul of New London; Miss Velma Robbins, Sam and Paul Walker of Moline, Ill.; Misses Ruth, Viola and Leota Walker and William Walker of Wapello and the host, Thomas Walker of Morning Sun. Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Umphrey and daughter Thelma, of New London and Ruth Walker of Wapello were visitors at Moline, Ill.
In context, this picnic was held the autumn after Leota Walker graduated from high school at Wapello. It was approximately one month after Paul and Belle [Hannah] Walker were divorced. It was about five months before Geoffrey Umphrey would die from complications of an operation. |
