April 6, 1875 was a Thursday.


April 6th 1875 (note in corner)..."a piece of my dress"

Dear Children

I take pen in hand this evening to write a few lines to try to find out what is wrong out there that we dont hear from you any more we have not had a word from you since the 23rd of Jan and we have only had one letter from John Fox since we come home I have had two from Grant I answer all I get, we got one from Maria of the 22nd of March and one of April 2nd George has been most all winter and she had a spell of fever two weeks but was up again She Says there was eight funerals there in Springfield one day She Says George looks more like a corps than a liveing person, there has been a good dale of Sickness here and Some deaths Mr. David Steel and Mr. John Borden are both dead, your paps health is not as good for a month past as it was last fall and winter I still keep sound and do my own work oh yes I got your pap to tap of maple trees the 2nd of April I made five pints of nice molasses, well I went yesterday to See the express agent about Sending you Some fruit he Says it will Cost about 50 cents for every half gallon jar and I would not dare Send them as freight for in all probability you would never get them there was a man Sent from this town Ship with two car loads of cloathing and provision and a government officer took possession of one car and he had to Send back to New London for authority before he could get the things to distribute, if you Say So I will Send 4 half gallon jars by express and I would pay the express on them freely if I was able to make money as I used to do but that day is past, tel Jane Coleman I went down cellar one day last week with a little paper bag to get Some Gladioles to Send her by Mail and they was Spoild I dont believe there is one of either kind that will grow, I hope this will find you all well write Soon farewell I remain your Mother K Fox tel me about Mr Abbots folks and all the old neighbors
