The First Land Owners of New London, Iowa, Township

The following text was transcribed from the 1975 New London Journal Centennial edition. The article was originally written by Ruth De Long Peterson:

In the New London Journal of Speptember 19, 1935, there appeared a list of the first purchasers of land in New London Township, furnished by George Van Allen, at the request of the Journal's editor, Ed Wessel. These records are still available at the [Henry County] courthouse, written in the old books in a fine penmanship. Date of filing the ownership is 1840 unless otherwise indicated. It will be noted that land around New London and to the west and south was taken first, with much of the prairie land to the north remaining until the late 1840's.
