William J. HardinTaken from: A Directory of Henry County Iowa, 1887; p. 654 William J. Hardin was born in 1806 near Lexington, Kentucky. Later he lived in Wayne County, Indiana where he married Prudence Walker in 1828. Along with the Tryer family and Jane [Walker] Leas family (all the matriarchs being daughters of George and Julian Jean Welsh/Welch Walker) William moved to Henry County, Iowa in 1839. He died in 1885 so this was written soon after his death. Hardin, William, far[mer]., 8. 14; P.O. New London; owns 115 acres valued at $50 per acre; born near Lexington, Kentucky, in 1806, February 12; thence moved to Indiana, and from there to Iowa in the fall of 1839; says there were numbers of Indians here at that time. Married Prudence Walker, from Tennessee; had three [sic] children -- Thomas B. L., Rebecca A., S. C. Lee [Sarah Catherine Hardin Lee]; four died in infancy. Mr. H. married Louisa King in 1877, also from Tennessee; have been members of the M. E. church for years. His son John Wesley was in the army three years as 1st Corporal 1st Infantry, V. C. Company E; was wounded in skirmish in Arkansas; lost one eye; taken prisoner and held until the close of the war; the ball was never removed from his head. |
