Rebecca Walker - Short Bio
Rebecca Walker, a sister of Francis Samuel Walker, was born October 22, 1815 in Knox County, Tennessee. Her grandparents, Charles and Elenor Walker, had immigrated to the United States from Ireland, and her father, George, was probably born soon after their arrival in the new world. Some of Rebecca's aunts and uncles were born in Ireland and others in the U.S.
In about 1820 the Walker family moved to Wayne County, Indiana. Rebecca, still a child, obviously moved with the family. At age 22 in on September 20, 1838 in Marion County, Indiana, she married John F. Tryer, who was born August 28, 1819 in Miamisburg, Montgomery, Ohio. John died September 2, 1899 in Medford, Jackson, Oregon.
One of Rebecca's older sisters, Prudence [Walker] Hardin, moved with her husband, William J. Hardin, to the unspoiled new country of Henry County, Iowa by 1839. It seems Rebecca and John joined them in the move, as Rebecca's first child, William, born in November, 1840, was said to be born in New London, Iowa. He lived 21 days. Life was very harsh on the frontier, which Iowa was in 1840.
