James Walker - Short Bio

This James was the son of George and Julian Jean Walker, and grandson of the Irish immigrants (Charles and Elenor) who came to the United States in the 1700s. He was a brother of Francis Samuel Walker.

James was born in 1800 in Knox County, Tennessee, lived in Indiana after his father and mother moved the family there, and had moved to Iowa at least before 1856, as evidenced in a letter he wrote to Francis Samuel Walker, encouraging him to come and live nearby in Warren County. (Francis S. instead stopped and put down roots in Henry County where sisters Rebecca Tryer, Jane Leas, and Prudence Hardin were already living.)

James may have had an early Indiana marriage to Polly Martin, but by 1856 (or rather most apparently before 1842) he was married to Ann Perkins, a native of Marion County, Indiana, who was born about 1802 and died apparently before 1860. They had the following known children:

Sarah Jane Walker, born in 1842 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.

Julia Ann Walker, born December 9, 1844 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, died September 16, 1870, in Warren County, Iowa.

James A. Chester Walker, 1849 (Indiana) - 1928 (Iowa). James married Mary L. C. Griffin February 19, 1875 in Warren County, Iowa, and their children were Charles E., Ida, and Sarah Jane Walker. Additionally known is that Charles E. married Minnie Edna Ader May 9, 1898 and they had a daughter Zella (1899) who married a man named Earl B. Rogers.

John Bennett Walker, 1851 (Indianapolis) - 1917 (Warren County, Iowa). John married Mary Julia Goode (born 1855 in Ohio, died February 2, 1898 in White Breast, Warren County, Iowa) on February 24, 1876, and they had the following known children: Irwin, Frank, Maude Pearl, Ethel M. (who married F. C. Courtney), and John Thompson Walker.

Charles C. Walker, 1852 - ?.

The 1860 Warren County, Iowa, census lists who is apparently James's brother, Charles as living on the farm with James. Additionally there is a 14 year old girl Mary, who presently is not "assigned" a parent.
