(Robert) Glenn Peterson - Short Bio

Robert Glenn Peterson, known as Glenn, was the son of J. E. Peterson and Florence ("Flossie") [Lee] Peterson. Robert grew up in New London, Iowa, where he attended the Lincoln School in the town square and later New London High School. Judging from photographs that are known, he played varsity basketball and football in New London; he graduated in the New London High School class of 1917. His father was a prominent businessman in the town, owning the main department store on Main Street and additionally the New London Mitten Factory (which evolved into the New London Glove Factory).

Glenn's mother, Flossie, was a granddaughter of Jane Walker (who was the sister of George Walker -- the George who was married to Julian Jean Welsh of Virginia). Florence was also a granddaughter of John Lee, one of the first white men to move into Henry County near New London. Her mother was Mary Jane (Versey) [Leas] Lee.

Glenn's father sold the New London department store in 1915 to E. R. Morrow. In 1917, the year Glenn graduated, J. E. Peterson died. The family sold off the other properties they owned in New London and moved to Los Angeles that year; Florence Lee's brother, William Lee, along with his wife, Sarah Catherine [Hardin] Lee, a cousin as well as sister-in-law of Mary Jane [Leas] Lee, had moved to L. A. in 1907. Both had just died there in 1916.
