Jonathan S. Pence - Short Bio

Jonathan Pence, a native of Rockingham County, Virginia, was born June 28, 1810. He married Mary (Polly) Tutweiler, the daughter of John Tutwiler and Mary Magdalena Strough, on April 27, 1835 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Jonathan joined the Union army during the Civil War and died of exposure June 2, 1865 in (or near) Alexandria, Virginia.

Jonathan and Mary [Tutweiler] Pence had three daughters:

Margaret Ann Elizabeth Pence was born in 1836 in Rockingham County, Virginia. She married Daniel Shumacher on November 21, 1855 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia. Daniel was born about 1830 in Rockingham County, Virginia.

Mary V. Pence was born in 1843 in Rockingham County, Virginia. She married Martin Dean, the son of William J. Dean and Mahala Kesling, on September 11 (or 17th), 1862 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia. Martin was born in 1838 in Barbour County, Virginia and died on an unknown date. They moved at some point, probably 1866, to Iowa, and settled in Cass County, Iowa.

Rebecca Ellen Pence was born on April 10, 1847 in Virginia, died on the 30 of March, 1919 in Iowa. She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun, Louisa County, Iowa. Rebecca married George Washington Earl Moyers, the son of of Samuel Nelson Moyers and Lucinda Hopkins Deen, on the 11th of November, 1869, in Des Moines County, Iowa. George was born on April 12, 1849 in Sperry, Des Moines County, Iowa and died on the 28th of March, 1926 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. George was also buried in the Elmwood Cemetery. Rebecca and Goerge had ten children; see the links on their names for further information on their descendants.
