Samuel Nelson Moyers - Short Bio

Samuel Nelson Moyers, the son of Jacob and Sarah [Rogers] Moyers, was the paternal grandfather of Hattie Mae Moyers. He was born five miles north of Carrollton in Greene County, Illinois, on January 31, 1827, and he lived until January 13, 1920, when he died in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa (possibly it was Mediapolis, as that was where Sam lived in his later years). A younger brother of Sam's, also born in Illinois, who also lived in Des Moines County, Iowa, was Andrew Jackson Moyers, who married the sister of Sam's wife, Lucinda (Mary Elizabeth Dean). Andrew died at age 32. Sam and Andrew's first cousin, Harrison Moyers, and his wife Sarah [Ashenfelter] Moyers and family, also lived for a time in the Burlington area, so a large chunk of Moyers family had made its was to Des Moines County, Iowa, by about 1850.

Samuel Nelson Moyers married Lucinda Hopkins Deen (whose correct family name was spelled "Dean," but several family members used the "Deen" spelling) on August 6, 1846. She was a native to Lewis County, (West) Virginia, where she was born June 15, 1823. She preceded Sam in death on November 9, 1909. She died in Mediapolis, Des Moines County, Iowa.

Sam and Lucinda [Deen] Moyers had the following children:

Marietta Moyers, born October 5, 1847 in Iowa and died August 16, 1862. Marietta is buried in the Loper Cemetery in Des Moines County, Iowa.

George Washington Earl Moyers, born April 12, 1849 in Sperry, Des Moines County, Iowa and died March 28, 1926 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. George Moyers was buried in Elmwood Cemetery near Morning Sun, Louisa County, Iowa. November 11, 1869 in Des Moines County, Iowa, George married Rebecca Ellen Pence, who was born April 10, 1847 in Virginia and died March 30, 1919 in Iowa. Sarah Elizabeth Moyers, born August 30, 1850 in Iowa, and died June 22, 1881; Sarah is buried in Loper Cemetery, Des Moines County, Iowa. She was married to James W. Larkin (October 2, 1851 - December 7, 1919; buried at Loper Cemetery). (See a list of their descendants under the linke to Sarah.)

Jacob N. Moyers, born November 4, 1852 in Iowa; and died in 1888 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. Jacob was married first to Emma E. Swank; she died before 1880. They had a daughter, Lillian B. Moyers, born in about 1879. Later Jacob married Kate A. Stanley and had three children: Alpha V., Maude C., and Stanley Moyers.
