Roy G. Fortner - Short Bio

Roy G. Fortner was Maude Mae [Walker/Umphrey]'s second husband; he and she were married after the death of her first husband, Geoffrey Umphrey. He was born September 18, 1894 and died January 19, 1968. According to his family, he was adopted from an orphanage in Illinois and a fire later destroyed all the records.

Maude (November 14, 1897 - December 17, 1970) and Roy Fortner first lived in Iowa when they were married in 1932, but they soon moved to Detroit, Michigan (probably by 1936 or 1937) along with Maude's children from her first marriage, and that is where most of Maude's family still resides today.

The move to Michigan was probably the result of one of Roy's sisters living there. Lillian [Fortner] Vance, the wife of John Vance, lived in Detroit by the mid 1930s. Later she returned to Knoxville, Iowa, and she died in about 1962 or 1963, not long after another older sister of Roy and hers, Nora, died. Roy was the only heir to Lilly's will, and he and Maude moved from Michigan to Knoxville after Lilly's death. Roy lived in Knoxville until he died in January, 1968. (Soon after Roy's death, Maude moved from Knoxville to West Burlington, Iowa, where she died in 1970.)

Roy is buried in Elmwood Cemetery with Maude and her first husband, Geoffrey Paul Umphrey.
