Bazzel S. Dotson - Short Bio

Bazzel S. Dotson was born in Maryland February 8, 1814, was raised in Pennsylvania, moved to Des Moines County, Iowa by 1944 and Louisa County, Iowa in 1849. He married Mary Davidson (July 3, 1817 - May 11, 1896), a native of England, and they had fourteen children, including Susanna Dotson, the wife of Alexander Hamilton (Jr.). Bazzel was therefore the grandfather of Frank Upton Hamilton, who married Cora Ellen Moyers.

Bazzel's son Mark Dotson (see below) was the grandfather of Ted and Verona Dotson, who married Myrtle and George Walker. His daughter Eva E. Dotson married George Reymer Deihl and her great great granddaughter was Julie Delio.

Bazzel and Mary's children were:

  • Joseph M. Dotson, born February 21, 1837, died in 1921. In October, 1865 Joseph married Amanda C. Van Horn, whose birth date is unknown and died in 1867; later Joseph (in 1868) married Josephine W. Welch, who was born in 1841 in Indiana and died in 1922 in Louisa County, Iowa. Joseph and his first wife, Amanda, were the parents of Buena V. Dotson (September 24, 1867 - August 01, 1904), and she was the wife of Frank Abrams.
  • Susannah Dotson, born October 5, 1838 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, died December 28, 1900 in Louisa County, Iowa; she married Alexander Hamilton Jr. (named after his grandfather), the son of Samuel Hamilton and the father of Frank Upton Hamilton who married Cora Ellen Moyers. Alexander (Jr.) was born August 14, 1831 in Fayette, Fulton County, Ohio and died February 1, 1919 in Morning Sun, Louisa County, Iowa. He and Susannah Dotson were married December 4, 1856 in Louisa County, Iowa. They had ten children.
  • Sarah J. Dotson, born between 1840-1841, died after 1912; Sarah married George W. Turner whose birth date is unknown. He died in 1911 and is buried at the Columbus City Cemetery in Louisa County, Iowa.
  • Mark Dotson, born 1841, died 1926; Mark married Martha E. Beir, who was born in 1846 and died in 1927. Mark and Martha were the parents of four children, including Oscar Brown Dotson, the father of Theodore Roosevelt (Ted) and Verona V. Dotson (Walker).
  • David Dotson, born October 15, 1841 in Pennsylvania, died in 1906. David married Lydia A. Beir (sister to Mark Dotson's wife, Martha). Lydia was born in 1843 in Iowa and died in 1926 in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa. Their marriage was November 2, 1862 in Louisa County, Iowa. David and Lydia had five children, one of whom was Mary Etta Dotson, the mother of Edith Pauline Hobbs.
  • George B. Dotson, born between in 1843 in Pennsylvania, died March 21, 1880 in Mechanicsburg, Wayne County, Ohio. George B. married Anna J. Jones and they had one son: Tommy Dotson, also of Mechanicsburg, Ohio (1878 - January 04, 1886).
  • Mary Adeline Dotson, born 1846, died unknown, the wife of Jerry Felger.
  • Harriet Dotson, born November 01, 1848 - died June 26, 1928; Harriet married Nathaniel Ewing Stevens, who was born in 1848 and died November 03, 1921. Harriet and Nathaniel had five children. They are both buried in Wapello Cemetery, Wapello, Iowa.
  • Caroline S. Dotson, born January 27, 1851 and died March 05, 1889, the wife of Henry M. Smith who was born about 1844. Caroline died in Tabor, Fremont County, Iowa.
  • John Irvin Dotson, born 1850, died unknown, the husband of Alice Sprinkle. They had one known son, John Basil Dotson.
  • Irene Dotson, who was born circa. 1852 and died after 1912.
  • Oliver Perry Dotson, born March 15, 1855, died May 12, 1939; Oliver married Mary Ellen Fitzgerald, who was born in 1869 and died in 1929; they had four children. He also married Sadie Gilmore, who was born October 25, 1861 and died March 2, 1889. Sadie and Oliver had one son.
  • Anna B. Dotson, born May 28, 1858, died July 7, 1868.
  • Eva E. Dotson, born July 17, 1861, died November 01, 1952; she married George R. Deihl, who was born in October 27, 1857 and died in June 1927. Eva and George had five children; see the link on her name for a detailed listing of their descendants.

Bazzel died March 25, 1873 and is buried at the Fairview Cemetery, Wapello Township, Louisa County, Iowa.
