Lucinda Hopkins [Deen] Moyers - Short Bio
Lucinda Moyers was the paternal grandmother of Hattie Mae Moyers. She was born Lucinda Deen (or Dean) in Lewis County, (West) Virginia (probably) on June 15, 1823, to Jacob and Judith [Cox] Deen. Lucinda's tombstone says she was born June of 1824, but her brother, George Washington Deen, was born September 4, 1824. The 1856 Des Moines County census listed George as age 32 and Lucinda as age 30; it is of questionable value. The 1823 figure I have presently settled upon was provided, along with extensive Dean family genealogy, by Ronna Cunningham.
Some of the Dean and Deen families (though some members used the Deen spelling, apparently the Dean spelling was correct) moved to Iowa as early as 1844. Lucinda married Sam Nelson Moyers on August 6, 1846 in Des Moines County, Iowa. He was the son of Jacob Moyers (March 27, 1797 - June 13, 1863) of Pennslyvania and Sarah [Rogers] Moyers (March 16, 1802 - September 16, 1867) of Kentucky (Lucinda's sister, Mary Elizabeth Dean married Andrew Jackson Moyers on July 22, 1849).
Lucinda and Sam Moyers had the following children:
- Marietta Moyers, born October 5, 1847 in Iowa and died August 16, 1862. Marietta is buried in the Loper Cemetery in Des Moines County, Iowa.
- George Washington Earl Moyers, born April 12, 1849 in Sperry, Des Moines County, Iowa and died March 28, 1926 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. George Moyers was buried in Elmwood Cemetery near Morning Sun, Louisa County, Iowa. November 11, 1869 in Des Moines County, Iowa, George married Rebecca Ellen Pence, who was born April 10, 1847 in Virginia and died March 30, 1919 in Iowa. Rebecca is also buried at Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun, Louisa County, Iowa. To see the many descendants of George and Rebecca, please click on their alpha pages via the links above.
- Sarah Elizabeth Moyers, born August 30, 1850 in Iowa, and died June 22, 1881; Sarah is buried in Loper Cemetery, Des Moines County, Iowa. She was married to James W. Larkin (October 2, 1851 - December 7, 1919; buried at Loper Cemetery). (See a list of their descendants under the linke to Sarah.)
- Jacob N. Moyers, born November 4, 1852 in Iowa; and died in 1888 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. Jacob was married first to Emma E. Swank; she died before 1880. They had a daughter, Lillian B. Moyers, born in about 1879. Later Jacob married Kate A. Stanley and had three children: Alpha V., Maude C., and Stanley Moyers.
Lucinda Moyers died November 9, 1909 in Mediapolis, Des Moines County, Iowa. She is buried at the Kossuth Cemetery, near Mediapolis.
