Jacob Deen - Short Bio

Jacob D. Deen was one of fifteen children born to John Dean (a native of England) and Mary [Knicely] Dean of Millertown, Shenandoah County, Virginia (now Woodstock County). Jacob was born in Rockingham County, Virginia on March 17, 1798. He married a native of Pendleton County, [West] Virginia, Judith Cox (January 13, 1797 - May 14, 1888), and they had the following descendants (this extensive Dean/Deen genealogy is courtesy of Ronna Cunningham):

  • George W. Deen (September 04, 1824 - February 28, 1913) George was born when the family was still in Virginia; he moved his family to Iowa about ten years after his father. George married Doshean A. Foster, who was born in Virginia February 1830 and died in Iowa September 04, 1912. They had the following descendants(this extensive genealogy of the Dean/Deen family is generously provided courtesy of Ronna Cunningham, a descendant of Silas Dean):
    • Rachel Dean, who was born about 1821 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died in Monona County, Iowa. Rachel was buried in the Hite Cemetery, Whiting, Monona County, Iowa. Rachel married Adam C. Shreve, who was born 1813 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia (per 1860 Iowa Census), and died March 26, 1874 in Des Moines County, Iowa. Adam is buried in the Loper Cemetery in Des Moines County, Iowa. Rachel and he were married August 23, 1838 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia. They had the following children:
      • Persy Shreve, who was born 1839 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia.
      • Martha A. Shreve, who was born 1842 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died December 28, 1886 in Des Moines County, Iowa. Martha is buried in Loper Cemetery, Des Moines County, Iowa.
      • Catherine E. Shreve, who was born 1843 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, died in 1934 in Des Moines County, Iowa, and was buried in Loper Cemetery, Des Moines County, Iowa. April 1, 1865 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia, Catherine married William S. Newcomb, who was born 1838 in Albemarle County, Virginia, and died 1934 in Des Moines County, Iowa. William is buried 1934 in the Loper Cemetery. Catherine and William Newcomb's child was: Perry Newcomb, who was born March 6, 1880, and died November 27, 1880. Perry is buried in Loper Cemetery.
      • Lucinda Jane Shreve, who was born 1844 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died 1925 in Monona County, Iowa. Lucinda is buried in the Hite Cemetery, Whiting, Monona County, Iowa. She married James Dexter Dean, who was born 1836 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died 1918 in Monona County, Iowa. They were wed January 10, 1867 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia.
      • Marrietta Shreve, who was born in 1846 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia.
      • Jacob D. Shreve, who was born August 1849 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died September 10, 1853 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia.
      • John W. Shreve, who was born 1850 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia.
      • Charles M. Shreve, who was born in 1852 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia.
      • Silas B. Shreve, who was born 1856 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia.
      • Alolphus Shreve, who was born November 1858.
      • Lafayette Shreve, who was born about 1864 in West Virginia.
    • Lucinda Hopkins Deen, who married Samuel Nelson Moyers, who was born January 31, 1827 five miles north of Carrollton in Greene County, Illinois, and died January 13, 1920 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. They were married August 6, 1846 in Des Moines County; both are buried in the Loper Cemetery. Please see their list of descendants under their own alpha index pages on the links in this paragraph.
    • George Washington Deen (Dean), who was born September 4, 1824 in Lewis County [or Upshur County], (West) Virginia, and died February 28, 1913 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. George is buried in Loper Cemetery. He married Doshean A. Foster, who was born February 1830 in Virginia and died on her husband George's birthday, September 4, 1912, in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. They were married in 1848 in Virginia. Dosheen is buried with George in the Loper Cemetery in Des Moines County, Iowa. George and Dosheen had the following children:
      • Jacob W. Deen, who was born May 13, 1850 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died November 1, 1936 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. Jacob was buried in Loper Cemetery. Before 1896 he married a woman named Florence, who was born April 25, 1853, and died December 22, 1896 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. In 1897 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, he married a woman named Anna D. (?), who was born January 21, 1876, and died April 1, 1965. She is also buried in Loper Cemetery, Des Moines County, Iowa. Jacob and Anna had one son: Joel Austin Deen, who was born February 18, 1910, and died October 29, 1910 (buried in Loper Cemetery).
      • Elizabeth Dean, who was born in June of 1852 and died August 11, 1852, both in Upshur County, (West) Virginia.
      • Julia Ellen Dean, who was born in 1854 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia.
      • Mary Susan Dean, born in 1856 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia, and died in 1935 in Des Moines County, Iowa (buried in Loper Cemetery). Mary married Issac Newton Dean, who was born 1852 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia, and died 1926 in Des Moines County, Iowa. Isaac is also buried at Loper Cemetery. Issac and Mary were married December 15, 1874 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia.
      • Daniel W. Deen, who was born March 21, 1859 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, and died April 7, 1893 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. Daniel is buried in Loper Cemetery. He married Ruth A. Downer, who was born in about 1866, on December 23, 1889 in Des Moines County, Iowa. Daniel and Ruth had two children:
        • Wallace M. Deen, who was born between 1890 - 1893, and died at age 5 months, 13 days according to his tombstone. Wallace, as is the case with so many of the Dean family, was buried in Loper Cemetery, Des Moines County, Iowa.
        • Sterling G. Deen, who was born May 29, 1892, and died April 7, 1893. Sterling is buried at Loper Cemetery.
      • George W. Dean, who was born December 29, 1861 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, and died September 15, 1891 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa; he is buried at Loper Cemetery(?).
      • Lafayette Dean, born in 1865 in Sperry, Des Moines County, Iowa; he married Olive Kisling on April 15, 1891 in Des Moines County, Iowa.
      • Matilda Deen, who was born January 19, 1867, and died January 26, 1896. She was buried in Loper Cemetery, Des Moines County, Iowa.
      • Kittie Dean, who was born 1870 in Iowa.
      • Olive Deen, who was born November 13, 1871, and died May 26, 1877. Olive is buried in Loper Cemetery, Des Moines County, Iowa.

    • Mary Elizabeth Dean, who was born 1830 in Stony Run, Lewis County, (West) Virginia. Mary married Andrew Jackson Moyers, the brother of Samuel Nelson Moyers. Andrew was born December 2, 1829 in Carrollton, Greene County, Illinois, and died March 30, 1862 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. Mary and Andrew were married July 22, 1849. They are buried in Loper Cemetery. They had two children:
      • ??? W. Moyers, who was born between 1849 - 1850
      • Julia A. Moyers, who was born between 1854 - 1855
    • Silus Dean, who was born November 10, 1835 in Stoney Run, Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died July 3, 1915 in Spencer, Douglas County, Washington. Silus was buried in the Hite Cemetery in Whiting, Monona County, Iowa. He married Mary Elizabeth Martin, who was born April 15, 1841 in Lewis County, Virginia, and died March 13, 1912 in Monona County, Iowa (buried also at Hite Cemetery). They were married on December 30, 1858 in Birmingham Township, Schuyler County, Illinois. Silus and Mary had the following children:
      • Columbus M. Dean, born October 1859 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa; in about 1885 he married a woman named Ella S. (?), who was born January 1861 in Iowa, and they had the following children:
        • Carl W. Dean, who was born December 1885 in Monona County, Iowa.
        • Luella G. Dean, who was born June 1889 in Monona County, Iowa.
        • Verna M. Dean, who was born March 1898 in Monona County, Iowa.
        • Homer Dean, who was born November 1899 in Monona County, Iowa.
      • Charles Dean, who was born October 23, 1860 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, and died May 2, 1924 in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. Charles is buried in the Hite Cemetery in Whiting, Monona County, Iowa. His significant other was Ina Aminda Kimes, who was born March 25, 1868 in De Kalb County, Indiana (Ohio), and died June 28, 1946 in Seattle, King County, Washington. They met September 15, 1888 in Sloan, Monona County, Iowa. Ina is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Seattle, King County, Washington. Charles and Ina had the following descendants:
        • Edna Ethel Dean, who was born June 18, 1889 in Monona County, Iowa, and died July 6, 1927 in Seattle, King County, Washington. Edna was buried July 9, 1927 in Crown Hill, Seattle, King County, Washington. She married a man named Wilson, and they had two children: Jack Dean Wilson; and Clair Dean Wilson, who was born December 9, 1921, and died November 1985 in Marblemount, Skagit County, Washington.
        • Mamie Leora Dean, who was born February 1890 in Monona County, Iowa, and died February 19, 1976 in Petaluma, Sonoma County, California. Mamie married a man named Fish. She also married Jerald Martinson in about 1910 in Everett, Snohomish County, Washington, and they had three children:

Augusta married Ross Rayburn, and also George Fergusen, who was born April 30, 1882, and died in February, 1974, in Seattle, King County, Washington. Augusta and George had a son, Richard Rayburn, who was born January 30, 1918 in Seattle, King County, Washington, and died July 1970 in Seattle, King County, Washington.
        • Dede Gail Dean, who was born July 21, 1895 in Monona County, Iowa, and died April 1982 in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California. Dede married a man named Bidwell, and also a man named Mosier. This second married produced a son, Raymond Mosier. Dede also married Kristian Sollien, who was born April 18, 1897, and died October 1967.
        • Clifford Eugene Dean, who was born 1897 in Monona County, Iowa, and died 1900 in Monona County, Iowa.
        • Lester Silas Dean, Sr., who was born March 1, 1899 in Monona County, Iowa, and died September 6, 1942 in Seattle, King County, Washington. Lester was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Seattle, King County, Washington. He maried a woman named Marie in about 1920; on June 22, 1922 he married Jessie Elinor Judd, who was born October 17, 1900 in Sidney, Cheyenne County, Nebraska, and died June 2, 1941 in Seattle, King County, Washington. They were married in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Jessie is also buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Seattle, King County, Washington. She and Lester had two children:
          • Dorothy Elinor Dean, who met Chester Manly Fouquet.
          • Lester Silas Dean, Jr., who married Dailene Morris.
          Lester Silas Dean, Sr., also married Ruby Wilson
      • Issac Homer Dean, who was born 1864 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa; he married Rebecca Bender.
      • James Worthington Dean, born in 1865 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa; James married a woman named Clara E. (?). She was born in July 1868. They were married about 1889 in Iowa. James and Clara had two children: Lillie M. Dean, who was born October 1890 in Monona County, Iowa; and Glen A. Dean, who was born March 1895 in Monona County, Iowa.
      • Asbury Dean, who was born 1867. He married a woman named Rose.
      • Samuel L. Dean, who was born in 1869 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. Samuel married Daisy Bender, who was born January 16, 1864 in Illinois, and died May 22, 1901 in Iowa. They were married in about 1896. Daisy is known to be buried in Lot 41, Hite Cemetery, Monona County, Iowa. Sam and Daisy had three children:
        • Vernon E. Dean, who was born about 1897 in Iowa.
        • Nellie D. Dean, who was born about 1899.
        • Blendena R. Dean, who was born about 1900 in Iowa.
        Samuel L. Dean also married Martha A. Hite, who was born about 1886 in Arkansas. They were married in about 1905 and had a child: Adrian M. Dean, who was born in Washington.
      • Edward Dean, who was born July 29, 1872 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa; he married Bertha Turner, who was born September 1875 in Kansas, and died in 1939 in Whiting, Monona County, Iowa. They were married after June 1, 1899 in Monona County, Iowa, and had the following children:
        • Grace Marie Dean, who married Roy S. Gregory. They had two children: Ronald Leroy Gregory, who married Judith Kelly; and Darlene Joan Gregory, who married Joseph Ernest.
        • Lloyd E. Dean, who was born in 1900, and died in 1931 in Monona County, Iowa. He married Lela Anderson and had a daughter, Bertha E. Dean.
        • John Dean, who was born March 1900.
        • Bernice E. Dean, who was born May 1, 1901 and died January 15, 1950. Bernice married Thomas Casey.
        • Everett Dean, who was born November 14, 1903 in Whiting, Monona County, Iowa, and died July 30, 1922 in Whiting.
      • Arthur Dean, who was born 1875 in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. Arthur married Catherine Dean, who was born in 1870 in Iowa, and died June 4, 1898 in Whiting, Monona County, Iowa. They were married on April 28, 1897 in Whiting, Monona County, Iowa. Arthur and Catherine had the following children:
        • Arthur Asbury Dean, who was born March 7, 1898 in Whiting, Monona County, Iowa, and died unknown. Arthur married Zema May Hindman, who was born September 13, 1898 in Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska. They were married May 31, 1919. Arthur and Zema had two children: Lyle Dean; and Vivian Edith Dean, who was born Whiting, Iowa. Vivian married Maiser Millard Rushton. Arthur Asbury Dean also married Ethel Cummings.
        • Otis Dean, who married a woman named Mildred. They had two sons: John Dean; and David D. Dean.

Jacob Deen died December 30, 1866 in Benton Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. Judith died in 1888. They are buried in the Loper Cemetery in Des Moines County, Iowa.
