Mary Catharine [Brewer] Hand - Short Bio

Mary Catharine Brewer, the daughter of Jehiel Brewer and Vashti Annie Walker, was born on March 20, 1857 in Wabash County, Indiana, died on May 24, 1913 in Henry County, Iowa and was buried in Farlow Cemetery, Henry County, Iowa. Mary's father died when she was young, either in Indiana or else Iowa, and Vashti and Mary moved in with Mary's grandparents, Francis S. and Catherine [Pearsey] Walker, where she was raised. Mary Catharine was called "Kate" in some of the letters on this web site from her uncle, Charles Pearsey Walker.

Mary married Benjamin Franklin Hand, a farmer, the son of Jacob Foster Winfield Hand and Sarah Ann Hendrickson, on July 26, 1886 in the home of Kate Briton in New London, Iowa. Frank was born on March 8, 1862 in New London, died on January 11, 1948 in Lowell, and was also buried on January 13, 1948 in the Farlow Cemetery. The cause of his death was a heart attack. Names Benjamin Franklin used were Frank, and most often B. F. Hand.

B. F. owned and operated the ice house in Lowell. He and Mary attended the Church of Christ, in New London.

The descendants of Mary and B. F. Hand were:

  • Lurena Ann Hand was born on November 26, 1886 in Lowell, Henry County, Iowa, died on September 2, 1942 in Iowa and was buried in Farlow Cemetery, Henry County, Iowa. Rena, as she was known, married Albert Hartman, the son of a Swiss immigrant father and Pennsylvania native mother on November 26, 1907 at her father's home in Henry County, Iowa. Albert was born about 1883 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, died on November 21, 1958 and was buried in Farlow Cemetery, Henry County, Iowa. By 1920, when Lurena's grandmother Vashti [Walker/Brewer] Edgar were listed as living with them in the U. S. Census, the Hartmans were farming on land rented from the widowed Ann Edgar and her children, Cressie, George, and (Percy) Arnie. Lurena and Albert Hartman Sr. had a son, Albert Hartman, who was born about 1912 and died in World War II. He was buried at sea.
  • Florence Vashti Hand was born on February 5, 1888 in Iowa, died on January 14, 1983 in Iowa and was buried in Trinity Cemetery, Mount Union, Henry County, Iowa. Florence married Ira Tate Hale, son of William K. Hale and Anna Tucker, on January 26, 1906 in New London, Henry County, Iowa. Ira was born on October 13, 1882 in Mount Union, Henry County, Iowa, died on March 30, 1931 in Mount Union, and was buried in Trinity Cemetery in Mount Union. He was killed by the accidental discharging of a gun. Florence and Ira had seven children:
    • an infant who was born and died in 1906-1907 in Mount Union. This child was buried in Trinity Cemetery.
    • Everett Tate Hale was born on October 6, 1907 in Mount Union, died on March 8, 1922 and was buried in Trinity Cemetery.
    • Ada Mae Hale married Cecil Francis Venghaus, a graduate of Mount Union High School, a farmer, and the son of J. A. Venghaus and Ora Walker, on February 15, 1927. Cecil was born on September 20, 1903 north of Morning Sun, Louisa County, Iowa, died on March 26, 1996 in Henry County Health Center, Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa and was buried on March 29, 1996 in Trinity Cemetery, Mount Union, Henry County, Iowa. Ada and Cecil had a son, Ralph Dwayne Venghaus, who was born on September 1, 1929, died on June 20, 1977 and was buried in Sheridan Cemetery, Mount Union, Iowa. Ralph's wife was Ruth Marie Sanquist and their son was Gene Richard Venghaus, who married Frances Mae Anderson.
    • Vera Frances Hale was born on August 10, 1914 in Mount Union, Henry County, Iowa and died on February 2, 2002 in Mountain Home, White County, Arkansas. She married Cecil Woodrow Miller, a farmer and carpenter, and the son of Fred Miller and Bettie Toft. Cecil was born on May 6, 1915 in New London, Henry County, Iowa, died on March 16, 1993 in New London and was buried in Trinity Cemetery, Mount Union, Henry County, Iowa. The children from this marriage were: Marvin Lee Miller, who married Florence Louise Riemann; Norma Jean Miller, who was born on February 6, 1945, died on February 3, 1946 and was buried in Trinity Cemetery; and Kay Laraine Miller, who married Wayne Richard Vierling.
    • William Woodrow Hale ("Woodrow") was born on March 25, 1918 in Mount Union, died on September 3, 1988 in Mount Union, and was buried in Trinity Cemetery. Woodrow graduated in 1936 from New London (Iowa) High School. He married Freeda Lorraine Iles, the daughter of John Adam Iles and Harriet A. Cooper. Freda was a New London High School graduate as well, from the class of 1936. Willliam and Freda had two daughters:
      • Shirley Ann Hale, who married Dale Ronald Blint, the son of George Blint Jr. and Marjorie Smith. Dale, a carpenter for many years, also worked at J. I. Case Company in Burlington and Mackay Envelope in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He and Shirley additionally ran the concession stand at Geode State Park southeast of New London. Dale was born on March 7, 1936 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, died on August 6, 1999 in Henry County Health Center, Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa and was buried on August 10, 1999 in Burge Cemetery, New London, Henry County, Iowa.
      • Wanda Jean Hale, who was married to Jack Russell Wormington.
    • Arlene Hale, who became a novelist, was born on June 16, 1924, died on January 26, 1982 and was buried in Trinity Cemetery. Arlene used several pseudonyms in her writing, including Gail Everett, Louise Christopher, and Lynn Williams. She specialized in childrens' books and dime store romance novels, with a preponderance for stories about nurses. Arlene and a lifelong companion made their home in New London, Iowa, where Arlene graduated from the local high school in 1941.
    • an infant who was born after 1924, died after 1924 and was buried in Trinity Cemetery.
  • William Frank Hand was born on November 12, 1889 in Iowa, died on March 5, 1890 in Iowa and was buried in Farlow Cemetery, Henry County, Iowa. The cause of his death was crib death (SIDS).
  • John Edgar Hand was born on December 28, 1890, died on April 18, 1958 and was buried in Farlow Cemetery. He lived for a time in Polson, Lake County, Montana, and was there in 1948 when his father died. John married Blanche Hazel Brown on February 17, 1915. Blanche was born on July 23, 1884, died on September 11, 1972 in Morning Sun, Louisa County, Iowa and was also buried in the Farlow Cemetery. John and Blanche had two children:
    • John Franklin Hand, who used the name "Buster," was born on July 21, 1919 in Pleasant Grove, Des Moines County, Iowa, died on May 5, 1998 in University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa and was buried on May 10, 1998 in Farlow Cemetery, Henry County, Iowa. At different times he worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, and the Danville Telephone Company. He liked hunting, fishing, and horses. When a young man, John lived in Polson, Montana. During World War II John was married to Laura Irene Rhum ("Irene") at Camp Hood, Texas. Their children are:

      • Ada Irene Hand, who married Ralph Henry Blanchard, the son of Herbert Warren Blanchard and Lois Lorraine Leudeman. Ralph was born on May 5, 1962 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, died on September 28, 2000 in near Defiance, Shelby County, Iowa and was buried on October 2, 2000 in Claypole Cemetery, Wever, Lee County, Iowa. The cause of his death was a motor vehicle accident while doing his job. Ralph was a 1980 graduate of Fort Madison High School, Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa. He was working for Liberty Transportation in Burlington, Iowa, and living in Wever (Lee County) at the time of his death. Ada and Ralph had two children: Kallista Blanchard and Johnathan Blanchard.
    • Dot Vashti Hand married Howard John Breen, the son of ? Breen and ? Schreck. Howard was born on April 12, 1914 in Lomax, Henderson County, Illinois, died on December 13, 1995 in Loma Linda University Medical Center, Yucaipa, San Bernardino County, California (he had lived in California for 19 years). Howard was buried in June 1996 in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. Dot and John had the following children: Terry Howard Breen, who married Sylvia "Jeanne" Sellers; James Gary Breen, who married Sharon Rose Virnig, and next married Beatrice Denton; Steven Charles Breen, who married Christina Langdon; Linda Carol Breen, who married Frank Fortier; and Paul Gregory Breen.
  • Edith Emily Hand was born on June 3, 1892 in Iowa, died on October 30, 1967 in Iowa and was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Center Township, Henry County, Iowa. Edith married Dallas H. Kirkpatrick. He was born in 1888, died in 1950 and was also buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Children from this marriage were:
    • Velma Laura Kirkpatrick was born on June 22, 1913 and died on December 30, 1994. Velma married William Joe Bugg on June 15, 1940. Joe was born on March 11, 1912, died on November 9, 1981 and was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Center Township, Henry County, Iowa. At some time in his life he was a resident of Kentucky, as his social security number was originally issued to him there. Velma and Joe Bugg had four children:
      • Edith Nell Bugg ("Sissy"), who married a man named Daugherty.
      • Mary Ellen Bugg, who married a man named Ellis.
      • Henry Bugg, also known as "Doodle." Henry lives in Wever, Lee County, Iowa; is presently married.
      • William Joe Bugg ("Billy") of Donnellson, Iowa. Billy is married to Joyce Judy ?.
    • Max F. Kirkpatrick was born on August 6, 1914 and died on November 15, 1994. He married Dorothy Crowder, and they had a son, Max Kirkpatrick Jr., who married Sarah Price. Max Jr. next married Shirley ? and had two sons: Kenneth Kirkpatrick and Robert Kirkpatrick.
    • Dale Addison Kirkpatrick married Delpha Young. Their children were: Douglas Kirkpatrick; Deb Kirkpatrick; and Diana Kirkpatrick.
  • Inez Alzada Hand was born on October 24, 1893 in Iowa and died on January 5, 1972 in Oquawka, Henderson County, Illinois. Inez married Clifford Hart, and had two children:
    • Ivorene Hart, who married Lambert Johnson and had four children: Lee Johnson; Roger Johnson; Barbara Johnson; and Dary Johnson.
    • Frances Hart married Glen Palmer and had a son, Von Palmer, who was born on September 7, 1931 and died in October of 1984.
    Inez also married Arlie Kirkpatrick (twice). The marriage ended in divorce (twice). Inez also married Clark Gulick. Clark was born on April 11, 1900 and died on August 5, 1985.
  • Charles F. Horace Hand was born on October 14, 1895 and died on October 22, 1918 in France. The cause of his death was spinal meningitis; Charles contracted it and died in France during World War I.
  • Edna Cecil Hand was born on May 26, 1897 in Iowa, died on September 11, 1994 and was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Elliott, Montgomery County, Iowa. Edna married Harry C. Welsch on July 1, 1917 in Red Cloud, Webster County, Nebraska (Later Edna married a man named McCabe). Harry was born on December 30, 1895, died on May 14, 1951 and was buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Elliott, Iowa. Children from this marriage were:
    • Charles Franklin Welsch was born on March 19, 1922 in Welsch Family Farm, Montgomery County, Iowa, died on February 26, 1987 in Saint Joseph Hospital, Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska and was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Elliott, Montgomery County, Iowa. Charles married Betty Marie Braden, and had a daughter, Candace Edna Welsch ("Candy"), who married John Raymond Tischer.
    • Margaret Jean Welsch married Max Lee Miller, and they had two sons and a daughter: Dennis Harry Miller, who was born on February 14, 1953, and died ate age three days on February 17, 1953. He was buried in the Hillside Cemetery, Elliott, Montgomery County, Iowa; and Douglas Charles Miller, who was born on September 14, 1953, died on September 17, 1953 and was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Elliott, Montgomery County, Iowa; and Marla Lee Miller, who married Douglas Lee Turner.
    • Frederick Dean Welsch Sr. married Lois Whitaker, known as "Lorraine." She was born on March 27, 1929, died on April 22, 1987 and was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Elliott, Montgomery County, Iowa. (Frederick later married again). Frederick and Lorraine's children were: (1) Elise Diane Welsch, who married Gary Michael Erickson. They have three children, Matthew Michael, Megan Michelle, and Michael Gary Erickson; (2) Frederick James Welsch who was called "Jimmy." Jimmy married Marianne Mattson and had a two daughters, Danika Diane and Melissa Mae; (3) Frederick Clifton Welsch Jr., known as "Freddy." Freddy married Sara Jane Dickerson and had a son Frederick James Clifton ("Taylor") Welsch; (4) Malia Ruth Welsch, who married Barry Williams. Malia next married Melvin (Jon) Gustafson and their daughter is Samantha Jo; and (5) Tricia Ann Welsch, who married James Edward Weise. They have three sons, Scott James, Bradley Joe, and Brian Daniel Weise.
