This bookmark has a photograph of Charles William Lett on it. It was his mother's bookmark. Possibly she used it after his death from the Spanish flu.

Ella Lett, my great grandmother, was likely the oldest child of Samuel Edmond and Hannah Marie (Honson) Johnson (they had several children, who died as infants, whose birth and death dates are not known). Ella was born October 14, 1870, in Des Moines County, Iowa. She spent much of her life in rural Des Moines County, near Mediapolis, but after her son, Charlie, moved to Burlington in about 1915, she and the rest of the family moved their to join him. Ella married Walter Theodore Lett March 16, 1892, in Burlington (which also is in Des Moines County). Their children were Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm (1893-1953), my grandmother, and Charles William "Charlie" Lett (1899-1918). Charlie died during the Spanish flu epidemic of the flu.

This is the same photograph that was used of Ella Johnson on her marriage certificate to Walter Theodore Lett. It was taken in Burlington, Iowa, at Reynolds Studio (which was at 422 Jefferson Street, owned by J. H. Reynolds).

A precious one from us has gone
      A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
      Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled,
The boon His love had given,
And though the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in Heaven.

    • Mrs. Ella Lett Is Dead Here
Lifelong Resident of Des Moines County Succumbs At Home Here

Mrs. Ella Johnson Lett, wife of Walter Lett, died at her home, 1316 North Sixth street, at 6:10 last night. Mrs. Lett had lived here all of her life.

Born here October 14, 1870, she celebrated her sixtieth birthday anniversary Tuesday of this week. She was married to Mr. Lett in 1892 at the home of W. W. Dodge in Burlington. She was a member of the Hawkeye Natives auxiliary and the Methodist church. Mrs. Lett had been seriously ill since July.

Surviving relatives, besides her husband, are one daughter, Mrs. Clayton Brumm of Mediapolis, two sisters, Mrs. Walter Page of Burlington and Mrs. A. W. Paddock of Malden, Illinois; one brother, Bamford [incorrectly spelled "Sanford" in the obit] Johnson of Kossuth, and seven grandchildren. One son, Charles Lett, and a brother, Frank Johnson, preceded Mrs. Lett in death.

Funeral services will be held at the home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Friends are invited. Burial will be in Kossuth cemetery.
    Personal Recollection
    • (Personal recollections and notes from Dale Brumm via e-mail:) I don't know where Bartlett Street is in Burlington, Iowa, and I don't know when they [Walter and Ella] moved from there. Even though I was only four, I remember going to their house on North Sixth Street. One time we stayed overnight and got up early and went over to Agency Street and watched the Ringling Brothers circus go to the fair grounds. I remember the elephants put their heads to the back of the circus wagons to help them up the hill. Grandmother [Ella Lett] had surgery, probably for cancer, and was cared for in the home. She passed away there and the funeral was held in the residence. I remember that Lorma and I stayed next door during the funeral and I think the neighbors' name was King. Grandpa lived there for some time afterward and then moved to a one room place on about Ninth Street. He remarried to a younger lady and that did not last long, and he then moved back to the ninth street location (I don't know if there was a divorce [from the second wife]). He lived on ninth street, and had a stroke and was unable to take care of himself, so he lived in a nursing home in Mt. Pleasant until his end.

The Wedding Photograph of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
The Wedding Photograph of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
This photograph was provided courtesy of Dale Hubert Brumm. Walter and Ella Lett were married March 16, 1892, in Burlington, Iowa. In my own possession is a wedding certificate with photographs of them. Walter does not have a mustache in that photo and Ella would seem to be a bit older, so perhaps they were photographed later for their wedding certificate.

Walter and Ella Lett were two of my paternal great grandparents. They were both first generation Swedish children born to immigrant parents in the Mediapolis, Iowa, area. They were married March 16, 1892, in Burlington, Iowa. A wedding photograph that exists at that time shows Walter with a mustache and Ella looks to be a bit younger than she is on this photograph, so perhaps they "published" their wedding certificate a few years after the marriage.

Bertha, my grandmother, is pushing the baby carriage with her brother, Charlie in this photograph. Someone, likely my father, wrote "Charlie -- Mom" on the picture. The back of the photograph identifies "H. E. Sewell" as the photographer. Likely this was Harry E. Sewell, who was a neighbor of Hannah (Honson) Johnson, the children's grandmother, in 1900.
