    • Email from researcher Frances Van Scoy:

My earliest COX ancestor is Robert COCK who married Catherine WALDREN 21 May 1822 in Pendleton County, Virginia. He was born before 1776 based on his age of 45 or older at the 1820 census and died before 16 February 1829, the date of his estate sale. (Purchasers at his estate saleinclude John Cocks and Joseph Cocks.) The death record of Warden Cox (28 January 1883, Pendleton County, West Virginia) lists Robert and Catherine as his parents.

Since Robert was over 45 at the time of his marriage to Catherine this may
have been a second marriage for him. He *might* be the Robert Cock who with Rachel Cock appears on a list of heirs of Henry PRINE in a 5 Noveber 1801 Pendleton County deedbook entry. (Heirs are Joseph and Judy SMITH, Ephraim and Rebeccah EATON, Anthony and Anna PRINE, Robert and Rachel COCK, and Joseph and Nancy PRINE.)

I've been told that Catherine Waldren was a widow, and that the Waldren name was that of her first husband.

I've tried to link Robert Cock/Cox to the Cock/Cox entries in the Hampshire County, (West) Virginia, personal property tax lists for 1793 - 1799 but without success. (Those names include Curtis Asby, Emmer/Emmor/Emsner, Isaac John, John Asby, Robert, and William.)

Warden Cox, son of Robert and Catherine Cock/Cox, was born in 1823 in
Pendleton County. He appears in the census in 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 in Pendleton. He died 28 January 1883 in Pendleton County. He married in 1845 in Pendleton Phebe Ann JEFFERS (1827-1897), daughter of James Jeffers and Phebe KING.

Their son John Robert Cox married in 1881 in Grant County, WV, Mary Catherine CRITES, daughter of John CRITES and a different Phebe KING, probably a niece of Phebe (King) Jeffers.
