    Lucinda Hopkins "Lucy" (Deen) Moyers
Lucy Moyers was my 2nd great grandmother. She was the daughter of Jacob D. and Judith "Cox" Deen (the family surname seems to have always been spelled "Dean" until some groups within it moved to Iowa). Lucy was born in Lewis County, Virginia, in 1823. Later this was part of West Virginia. She lived a long life for someone of that era, dying in 1909 in Mediapolis, Iowa. She married Samuel Nelson "Sam" Moyers (1827-1920) August 6, 1846, in Tamatown (which no longer exists), Des Moines County, Iowa. They had four children.

    Alt. Spelling/AKA
    • Lucinda's family name was more correctly spelled as "Dean." In West Virginia records, the spelling "Deen" doesn't seem to exist. It apparently was a bastardized spelling that happened during the migrations westward. On the 60th wedding anniversary program of Sam and Lucy's, her name was spelled "Dean."
    Alt. Birth  15 Jun 1824  [8
    • Lucinda Hopkins Moyers headstone has the date June 24, 1824, on it. This is apparently wrong, as her brother, George W. Deen was born September 4, 1824. The 1856 Des Moines County Census lists Lucinda as age 30, indicating she was born in 1826. Ronna Cunningham, the Dean biographer, has a date of 1823. The 1900 census for Lucinda listed her birth as June 1825.

The 60th Wedding Anniversary Program of Samuel Nelson 'Sam' and Lucinda Hopkins 'Lucy' (Deen) Moyers
The 60th Wedding Anniversary Program of Samuel Nelson "Sam" and Lucinda Hopkins "Lucy" (Deen) Moyers
Sam and Lucy were married in 1846 in Tamatown (historical), Des Moines County, Iowa. It was very unusual for couples from that era to both be alive at the time of their 60th wedding anniversary, so one could say their longevity is quite an accomplishment.

This is a four page program that was printed for their 60th wedding anniversary. It has their picture and a biblical quote on the front, and genealogical information inside. Lucy's maiden surname was spelled "Dean" rather than "Deen" on this.

Two of the children of Hattie Mae Moyers Walker were incorrectly listed on the program as William and Herbert. They were Albert Ross and George.

Samuel Nelson "Sam" and Lucinda Hopkins "Lucy" (Deen) Moyers
Sam Moyers was the son of Jacob Moyers (1797-1863) and Sarah Walker "Sallie" Rogers (1802-1867). He was born January 31, 1827, five miles north of Carrollton, Illinois. He died January 13, 1920, at Burlington Hospital, Burlington, Iowa. His parents settled in Des Moines County, Iowa, in 1839. Lucy Deen was the daughter of Jacob D. Deen (1799-1866) and Judith "Judy" Cox (1797-1888). Lucy was born June 15, 1823, in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died November 9, 1909, in Mediapolis, Iowa. Her parents moved from Lewis County to Benton Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, in November 1844. Samuel and Lucinda are both buried at the Loper Cemetery in Des Moines County.
Samuel Nelson 'Sam' and Lucinda Hopkins 'Lucy' (Deen) Moyers Biography and Photograph
Samuel Nelson "Sam" and Lucinda Hopkins "Lucy" (Deen) Moyers Biography and Photograph
Sam and Lucinda Moyers's biography was published in 1888 in the book, A Portrait and Biographical Album of Des Moines County, Iowa, published by Acme Publishing in Chicago. A photograph of the two was also published in that volume. In 1886 they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. It is possible the photo was taken for that occasion, or any of the other anniersaries after about 1870. (There is also available a standalone photograph without the entire page of Sam and Lucinda.)

Samuel Nelson "Sam" and Lucinda Hopkins "Lucy" (Deen) Moyers 50th Wedding Anniversary (1 of 2)
This photograph was taken at the 50th wedding anniversary of Sam and Lucy Moyers, probably in August 1896 as their wedding was August 8, 1846. About 1/3 of the family posed in this picture can be identified, and likely the other 2/3 are those whom we'd love to know who they were.

Those who have been identified in this photograph are: Nora Olive (Larkin) Cunningham, Wiley E. Cunningham, Samuel Wilbur Larkin, Adolphus "Lee" Larkin, Abigail "Blanche" (Larkin) Marshall, Ira David Marshall, Oliver Spencer Marshall, Daisy Esther Marshall (baby), Rebecca Ellen (Pence) Moyers, George Washington Earl Moyers, Pearl Alfred "P. A." Moyers, Hattie Mae "Harriett" (Moyers) Walker, Elsie Ella Walker, Jacob Nelson Moyers, Kathryn Ann "Bappy" (Stanley) Moyers, Lillian Bell Moyers (later Giertz), Samuel Nelson Moyers, and Lucinda Hopkins (Deen) Moyers.

The woman to Sam and Lucy's left was identified as Cody (with a question mark), as a person who stood up with them at their wedding.

Two children in the front row I had identified as probably being Stanley Wilbur Moyers and Halleck Roy "Hal" Moyers (later "Moyer"). The boy I guess to be Hal particularly resembles a later photo of him as an adult.

Although a later photo of Cora Ellen (Moyers) Hamilton exists, I cannot see anyone who seems exactly to fit or match with her photograph twenty years later.

Some of the older people in this may be Sam's brothers. His brother Jacob Josiah Moyers was living in Chicago, and was married to a woman named Martha (who may or may not have still been alive in 1896. She was dead by 1900). Benjamin Franklin Moyers was married to the former Barbara Deam, also a former Des Moines County, resident, and they lived in Missouri.

Elizabeth Ann (Kurtz) Moyers was divorced from Sam's brother, George Washington Moyers, but she and some of her children and families lived nearby in Louisa County, Iowa. If they were on good enough terms with her ex husband's family, they may be in this photograph. Also, I am not sure if Sam's brother George Moyers was still living or not, so he is another possibility. The Rexroats of McDonough County, Illinois, were also nephews and nieces, and not living too distant. Even the Lakin family, many of whom were still in Carrollton, Illinois, and vicinity, though Sam's sister Eliza had been dead over 30 years, may have travelled to Iowa for this celebration.

This photograph was provided courtesy of Larry Leon Dowell, Sam and Lucy's third great grandson. The identification was done by a relative of his, except for Hattie Mae and Elsie Walker, and Pearl Alfred Moyers.

This photograph, provided courtesy of Marge (Walker) Kimble, was taken at the 50th wedding anniversary of Sam and Lucinda Moyers. It is very similar to another photo provided courtesy of Larry Leon Dowell, but indeed it is not the same (as I first thought it was). Many people have been rearranged from the other photograph, some are new in this, and some apparently were not in this picture.

Apparently the birth year for Lucinda Hopkins (Deen) Moyers is incorrect by one year (1824 vs 1823) on her gravestone. Her brother, George, was born in September 1824, making a birth date of June, 1823, highly unlikely for Lucinda.
