  • Name  Bamford Freddie "Bam" Johnson  [1
    Nickname  Bam
Born  10 May 1883  Kossuth, Des Moines County, Iowa Find all individuals with events at this location  [1, 2, 3
    Gender  Male
    Alt. Birth
    • Per the Social Security Administration, Bam's birth was May 10, 1883, not 1882. An Iowa birth record exists for a son born to Samuel & Hannah Johnson at LDS family search with a date of May 14, 1883, which apparently is Bam.

However, per his listing in the 1900 federal census, he was born in April 1882. His draft card registration stated May 10, 1882 (they're often one year off, though), but his headstone ALSO stated May 10, 1882.

As two other siblings (twins) were born (and died) to Samuel and Hannah in January 1882, the 1883 date seems most likely, or else he was a very premature baby.

    Personal Recollection
    • (A personal note from genealogist Dale Brumm to his sister, Lorma Allen:)

Bam was tired of living in his 60's and tried to shoot himself, but the ammo was so old it didn't do the job. He was (see below--) put in a nursing home* (--see below) and committed suicide by cutting his wrists.

      (Note: He was actually 89.)

(An email from Henrietta Johnson, the wife of Donald Johnson, Bamford's grandson, relating to the information above:)

Bam and Howard lived with Hannah after Pearl died. They lived in a very small house in Kossuth. The house belonged to Hannah. It had no running water or electricity all the while that Bam lived there. Bam lived there until he moved in with Grace and Howard in Mediapolis some time in the 60's.

Bam was never put in a nursing home. He took his life while living with Grace and Howard. Howard had not been well for years and Bam did not want to be a burden to them. He did not want to have to be taken care of.

In about 1910 my paternal Johnson family decided to pose for a family portrait. This features my second great grandmother, Hannah Marie Johnson, and her grown children. In the back row left to right, were Nettie Marie (Johnson) Paddock, Sophia May "Sophie" (Johnson) Page, and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett. In the front row, Hannahs sons were Frank Robert Johnson on the left and Bamford Freddie "Bam" Johnson on the right. Hannah is wearing traditional Swedish costume. Henrietta (Thomson) Johnson kindly provided this photograph for use.

    Bamford Freddie "Bam" Johnson
Bam Johnson, the son of Samuel Edmond and Hannah Marie (Honson) Johnson, was born in Kossuth, Des Moines County, Iowa, on May 10, 1882. He grew to manhood in this region and married Pearl "Blanch" Ping July 5, 1905, in Yarmouth, Iowa. Pearl was the daughter of Bolen J. and Ida L. (Purcell) Ping. Both her parents had died before she was seven years old, and she'd been raised by relatives. Pearl and Bam Johnson moved to Illinois and in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois, she gave birth to a son, Howard Raymond Johnson. Soon thereafter, Pearl died from effects of tuberculosis. Bam and Raymond moved back to Iowa and lived with Bamford's mother, Hannah. In later years, Bam lived with his son, Howard. He committed suicide January 18, 1971, at the age of 88, because he didn't want to be a burden to Howard and his family.
