    Personal Recollection
    • (Personal recollection sent from Dale Hubert Brumm to his sister, Lorma Leota Brumm Allen:) Grandpa (Walter Lett) went to work at the Leopold Desk Company where he worked until he retired in 1938 or 1939. One of the Leopolds (Frank I think) who was the expert on wood ducks gave a presentation to the Audubon Society here in Sioux City and when I asked him if he knew grandpa he told me that when he came home from the army (probably in 1919) he worked in the factory a while and fitted drawers to the desks that grandpa assembled.

The Wedding Photograph of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
The Wedding Photograph of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
This photograph was provided courtesy of Dale Hubert Brumm. Walter and Ella Lett were married March 16, 1892, in Burlington, Iowa. In my own possession is a wedding certificate with photographs of them. Walter does not have a mustache in that photo and Ella would seem to be a bit older, so perhaps they were photographed later for their wedding certificate.

Walter and Ella Lett were two of my paternal great grandparents. They were both first generation Swedish children born to immigrant parents in the Mediapolis, Iowa, area. They were married March 16, 1892, in Burlington, Iowa. A wedding photograph that exists at that time shows Walter with a mustache and Ella looks to be a bit younger than she is on this photograph, so perhaps they "published" their wedding certificate a few years after the marriage.

Bertha, my grandmother, is pushing the baby carriage with her brother, Charlie in this photograph. Someone, likely my father, wrote "Charlie -- Mom" on the picture. The back of the photograph identifies "H. E. Sewell" as the photographer. Likely this was Harry E. Sewell, who was a neighbor of Hannah (Honson) Johnson, the children's grandmother, in 1900.

    • According to Dale Brumm, Walter's 2nd marriage lasted only a short time, although there may never have been a divorce. It was with a woman Walter met in a bar, who was much younger than he. She took a lot of the dishes and so forth that had belonged to Ella [Johnson] Lett, and Lorma Allen remembers that this really irritated Ella's daughter, Bertha Brumm.

    Walter Theodore Lett
    Walter Theodore Lett
Walter Lett was my great grandfather. He was the youngest child of ten in his family. His parents were Charles H. and Caroline (Johnson) Lett, but their surname in Sweden was probably Anderson (as when the family first arrived in the United States in 1849/50, that was the name under which they were found in one U.S. and two Iowa state censuses). Walter married Ella Matilda Johnson, the daughter of Samuel Emond and Hannah Marie (Honson) Johnson. Her parents, as were Walter's were natives of Sweden. Walter and Ella were the parents of Bertha Leota Lett, my grandmother, who married Oliver "Clayton" Brumm, and Charlie (Charles William) Lett, who died at age 19 in 1918 during the Spanish flu epidemic. Walter Theodore Lett lived from 1866 until 1953, outliving both his children, his wife, parents, and all of his siblings.

He is said to have married a second time, to a woman whose name is not known, who was much younger than he. It's not clear whether or not they ever divorced. Perhaps she outlived Walter.

Walter Lett was the great grandfather of Susan Herman. This photograph was likely taken in the summer of 1942. (At least one living or private individual is linked to this item - Details withheld.)
    Walter Theodore Lett
    Walter Theodore Lett
This photograph was taken of Walter Lett during the 1940s. He was born in 1866 in Des Moines County, Iowa, and lived his entire life there until very late in life when he was in a nursing home in Mt. Pleasant (Henry Counry), Iowa. Walter died in May 1953.
Walter Theodore Lett With Two of His Buddies
Walter Theodore Lett With Two of His Buddies
This photograph encompasses three friends, probably taken in Burlington, Iowa. The man standing on the left looks vaguely like he could be the son of Brady Page (Walter Lett's brother-in-law was Walter Page). This is pure speculation as there is no known evidence to prove who this man is. Standing on the right is Walter Lett. Sitting down is a man which another photograph in my possession defines as "Ole Olson" or "Martin Olson." The 1900 federal census lists a Martin Olson in Burlington, born March 1877 in Iowa, the son of widower Nels Olson of Sweden. Whether or not he was a friend or a relative cannot be determined.
