    Biography
    • (A biographical sketch of Lillian Moyers courtesy of genealogist Kelvin Boyle:)

Lillian Bell Moyers Giertz was born October 7, 1878, in Huron, Des Moines County, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob Nelson Moyers and Emma Elizabeth Swank. She attended local schools and on June 18, 1902, she married Henry William Giertz in Mediapolis, Des Moines County, Iowa, the Reverend H. Newton Smith officiating. After her marriage she relocated to Joliet, Will County, Illinois, with her husband who was employed with L. F. Beach Company in Joliet. It was there that their only child, Margaret, was born.

On April 16, 1922, she became a member of the Ottawa Street Methodist Church in Joliet, and later served as Representative of Church Women and as President of the Home Misionary Society. She was also a member of the Bethany Circle of King's Daughters.

She died in her home on Sunday, March 26, 1967. The local Blood and Grant Funeral Home handled the arrangements, and services were held Wednesday, March 29, 1967, the Reverend Lawrence R. Axelton officiating. She is buried next to her husband in grave 8, lot 193, in the Ridgeland Section of Elmhurst Cemetery, 1212 East Washington Street, Joliet, Illinois.

Samuel Nelson 'Sam' and Lucinda Hopkins 'Lucy' (Deen) Moyers 50th Wedding Anniversary (1 of 2)
Samuel Nelson "Sam" and Lucinda Hopkins "Lucy" (Deen) Moyers 50th Wedding Anniversary (1 of 2)
This photograph was taken at the 50th wedding anniversary of Sam and Lucy Moyers, probably in August 1896 as their wedding was August 8, 1846. About 1/3 of the family posed in this picture can be identified, and likely the other 2/3 are those whom we'd love to know who they were.

Those who have been identified in this photograph are: Nora Olive (Larkin) Cunningham, Wiley E. Cunningham, Samuel Wilbur Larkin, Adolphus "Lee" Larkin, Abigail "Blanche" (Larkin) Marshall, Ira David Marshall, Oliver Spencer Marshall, Daisy Esther Marshall (baby), Rebecca Ellen (Pence) Moyers, George Washington Earl Moyers, Pearl Alfred "P. A." Moyers, Hattie Mae "Harriett" (Moyers) Walker, Elsie Ella Walker, Jacob Nelson Moyers, Kathryn Ann "Bappy" (Stanley) Moyers, Lillian Bell Moyers (later Giertz), Samuel Nelson Moyers, and Lucinda Hopkins (Deen) Moyers.

The woman to Sam and Lucy's left was identified as Cody (with a question mark), as a person who stood up with them at their wedding.

Two children in the front row I had identified as probably being Stanley Wilbur Moyers and Halleck Roy "Hal" Moyers (later "Moyer"). The boy I guess to be Hal particularly resembles a later photo of him as an adult.

Although a later photo of Cora Ellen (Moyers) Hamilton exists, I cannot see anyone who seems exactly to fit or match with her photograph twenty years later.

Some of the older people in this may be Sam's brothers. His brother Jacob Josiah Moyers was living in Chicago, and was married to a woman named Martha (who may or may not have still been alive in 1896. She was dead by 1900). Benjamin Franklin Moyers was married to the former Barbara Deam, also a former Des Moines County, resident, and they lived in Missouri.

Elizabeth Ann (Kurtz) Moyers was divorced from Sam's brother, George Washington Moyers, but she and some of her children and families lived nearby in Louisa County, Iowa. If they were on good enough terms with her ex husband's family, they may be in this photograph. Also, I am not sure if Sam's brother George Moyers was still living or not, so he is another possibility. The Rexroats of McDonough County, Illinois, were also nephews and nieces, and not living too distant. Even the Lakin family, many of whom were still in Carrollton, Illinois, and vicinity, though Sam's sister Eliza had been dead over 30 years, may have travelled to Iowa for this celebration.

This photograph was provided courtesy of Larry Leon Dowell, Sam and Lucy's third great grandson. The identification was done by a relative of his, except for Hattie Mae and Elsie Walker, and Pearl Alfred Moyers.
    Lillian Bell 'Lilly' Moyers
    Lillian Bell "Lilly" Moyers
Lilly was the only child of Jacob Nelson Moyers (1852-1951) and Elizabeth Emily "Emma" Swank (1855-1880). Lilly was born October 7, 1878, in Huron, Des Moines County, Iowa. Her mother died when she was one year old, and her father remarried a year later. Lilly was raised by her grandparents, Samuel Nelson "Sam" and Lucinda Hopkins "Lucy" (Deen) Moyers. In 1902 she married Heinrich Wilhelm Friederick, or "Henry William" Giertz of Illinois. They settled in Joliet, and in his later years, they tended to Sam Moyers after Lucy had died. Henry and Lilly Giertz had a daughter, Margaret E. Giertz, who was born April 14, 1906, in Joliet and died March 8, 1995, in Roswell, New Mexico. Margaret never married.
