      Betty Bertlshofer, Odetta Brumm First in Fairfield District Meet

      Two Burlington girls won first places in the district A. A. U. swimming meet, held at Fairfield, Iowa, Sunday. Betty Bertlshofer was first in the girls' 50 yard free style event and Odetta Brumm won the women's 100 yard free style race.

      James Ramsey, entered in the men's 100 yard free style, was second in his preliminary heat. Bill Parry and Jack Archer, entered in the boys' events, did not compete.

      Misses Bertlshofer and Brumm, by winning their events in the district competition Sunday, qualified for the state swimming meet, to be held at Marshalltown. However, it is not likely that they will enter that event.

    The Charles G. Bosch Company, located in Burlington, Iowa, was the family business for Leslie Thomas "Les" Brumm. He worked for them as a bookkeeper as early as 1905, and was named the "proprietor of a plumbing business" on the 1910 federal census, indicating he had probably purchased the business before that date. The name of the business didn't change as nearly as can be told. Les died in 1941, and all of his family soon dispersed to Oregon and California soon thereafter.

    This cartoon was published in 1913. Possibly it is a caricature of Les.
