    • Mediapolis (IA) - We have again to record the death of one of the early residents of Kossuth, J. B. Pilling, who died very suddenly at his home December 25, 1879. He had been attending a funeral in the afternoon but felt slightly indisposed and had retired to rest early. About 30 minutes after eleven his wife observing him breathe heavily spoke to him but no answer was returned. Medical aid was called but too late, death had claimed its victim.

Deceased was a native of Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England. For some years he has been in the employ of Hutchcroft & Company, Kossuth Mills in the capacity of Engineer where he faithfully filled his post. Deceased leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his loss, who have our heartfelt sympathy.

It was essentially a flour mill, and wheat was harvested from a distance of 20 miles or more to be ground into flour. A short time after the railroad came to Mediapolis, the machinery from this mill was moved to Mediapolis. (picture) Joseph B. Pilling was a stationary engineer at a mill, likely this one.
