    • CHARLES LETT

Residents of Harrison, Iowa, in the early 1900's, Charles Clarence Lett and Lena Amgwert were married in Little Sioux on 8 February, 1903. Charles worked for Lena's father, Louis Amgwert as farm help. Soon after marriage they moved to Chariton County, Missouri, where two daughters were born. Leona Rozella was born 16 January, 1904; died 10 August, 1903. Florence Agnes, born 31 August, 1905, died 4 August 1908 in Malvern, Iowa. Both are buried in Union Township Cemetery near Triplett, Missouri.

While living near Malvern, Charles remembers hearing chunks of dirt falling in the Missouri River at night, as they lived near the river.

Charles and Lena (Amgwert) later moved to a farm in a community known as Glendale in Garner Township, Pottawattamie County, Council Bluffs, where they resided forty years which was known as the W. S. Mayne estate and was at one time part of the Chautauqua Grounds.

They saw the road paved in front of their home, which was known then as the "River to River road" also known as #64, now known as State Highway 191. Charlie could recall pulling many cars out of the mud before the paving, as there were under-ground springs which caused mudholes. Quite often they saw Mosquito Creek flood the lowlands in front of their home.

Three more children were born to this couple while they lived in Garner Township. Kenneth Amgwert was born 30 September, 1914, at home; married Margaret Greene of Council Bluffs, 18 May, 1936; Margarett Kathryn, born 14 February, 1919, married Joe Osborn of Hazel Dell Township, Pottawattamie County, 12 February, 1943; Gerald Berne, born 3 May, 1923, married Bonnie Norman of Shelby County, Iowa, 11 August, 1948; Kenneth now lives in Persia, Iowa. Margarett lives two miles west of Missouri Valley. Berne lives in Council Bluffs.

Charles Clarence, son [of] John and Maggie (Anderson) Lett was born 5 January 1873, in Keithsburg, Mercer County, Illinois. [His] Brothers and sisters [were] Carrie, Elsie (Twins), and Ed, Harvey and John. Charles's father was born on the English Channel, under American Flag of Swedish parents.

Lena was born 7 March, 1884 [in] Sedalia, Missouri. Her parents were Louis Michael and Katrina (Hartman) Amgwert, who were born in Switzerland, coming to America at the age of 26 and 16 respectively.

Charles and Lena were members of Glendale Presbyterian Church where they celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary in February 1953. They are buried in Hazel Dell Township Cemetery, Pottawattamie County. Charles died 27 April, 1954, age 81, and Lena died 6 August, 1955, age 71 years.
