Jennie Tryer (1845-1934) married John D. Watton (1837-1913), who came to Lowell from Pennsylvania in 1858 and was the village blacksmith. John Watton's parents were David and Sarah Watton. David was from England, and died of tuberculosis when John was young. John grew up in the Pennsylvania coal mining region, but rejected becoming a miner because of the many mine tragedies, and was apprenticed to a blacksmith instead.

John and Jennie Tryer Watton's children were Alpha (Mrs. Abner) Thornburg (1862-1950), Eugene, Harry, LeRoy (Prune), Clayton (Tommy) (1873-1963) and Ella (Mrs. Ed) Stephenson (1876-1973).

Eugene Watton married Anna Folsom (1871-1963), daughter of Edward and Elizabeth McKiney Folsom. They had one daughter, Miss Gladys Watton. Tommy Watton never married. Ed and Ella Stephenson had no children.

John Watton was born July 1, 1837, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He lived in Henry County, Iowa, by 1850 and married Jennie Tryer, the daughter of Rebecca (Walker) and John Faucett Tryer, on March 29, 1860. Jennie was 15 at the time. John and Jennie had seven children: daughter Sarah "Alpha" Thornburg, sons John Albert, Eugene Lee, Harry Raymond, and Clayton David "Tommy" Watton, daughter Ellen Dickey "Ella" Stephenson, and son Leroy Tryer "Prune" Watton.

John Watton was the son and only child of David and Sarah (Davis) Watton. His father had come to the United States from England. He died during a return trip to England in which he was planning to see his brother, a doctor. His death was only weeks before John was born.

As a young man, John came to Lowell, Iowa, working as a blacksmith. There he married Minerva Jane "Jennie" Tryer. Jennie ran a small hotel for a time in Lowell. Similarly, her father and stepmother operated a hotel for awhile.

John died February 13, 1913, in Lowell. Jennie died February 8, 1934, also in Lowell.
