    • OLDEST RESIDENT AT LOWELL DIES

      New London (IA) -- Mrs. Alpha Thornburg, 87, oldest resident of Lowell, died at 1:45 Friday morning following six months of illness.

      Sarah Alpha, daughter of Jennie Tryer and John Watton, was born at Lowell, Iowa, August 31, 1862. She was married at Fort Madison January 26, 1881, to Abner Edward Thornburg, who preceded her in death March 27, 1921.

      Mrs. Thornburg was a charter member of the "Get Together" Club and the Lowell Ladies Aid Society.

      She is survived by the following children: C. B. Thornburg, Lloyd E. Thornburg, and Mrs. Laura Pickle all of Lowell; Mrs. Mildred Fry of Ontario, Oregon. She also leaves 40 grandchildren 49 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister, C. D. Watton and Mrs. E. A. Stephenson of Lowell and L. T. Watton of Martinsburg, Iowa.

      The body is at the Elliott Chapel at New London and will be taken direct to the Lowell Church Saturday where funeral services will be held at 2:30. Reverend G. A. Thomas, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will be in the Lowell Cemetery.

    • Tryer-Watton-Thornburg

      Jennie Tryer (1845-1934) married John D. Watton (1837-1913), who came to Lowell from Pennsylvania in 1858 and was the village blacksmith. John Watton's parents were David and Sarah Watton. David was from England, and died of tuberculosis when John was young. John grew up in the Pennsylvania coal mining region, but rejected becoming a miner because of the many mine tragedies, and was apprenticed to a blacksmith instead.

      John and Jennie Tryer Watton's children were Alpha (Mrs. Abner) Thornburg (1862-1950), Eugene, Harry, LeRoy (Prune), Clayton (Tommy) (1873-1963) and Ella (Mrs. Ed) Stephenson (1876-1973).

      Eugene Watton married Anna Folsom (1871-1963), daughter of Edward and Elizabeth McKiney Folsom. They had one daughter, Miss Gladys Watton. Tommy Watton never married. Ed and Ella Stephenson had no children.

    John Davis and Minerva Jane "Jennie" (Tryer) Watton
    John Watton was born July 1, 1837, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He lived in Henry County, Iowa, by 1850 and married Jennie Tryer, the daughter of Rebecca (Walker) and John Faucett Tryer, on March 29, 1860. Jennie was 15 at the time. John and Jennie had seven children: daughter Sarah "Alpha" Thornburg, sons John Albert, Eugene Lee, Harry Raymond, and Clayton David "Tommy" Watton, daughter Ellen Dickey "Ella" Stephenson, and son Leroy Tryer "Prune" Watton.

    John Watton was the son and only child of David and Sarah (Davis) Watton. His father had come to the United States from England. He died during a return trip to England in which he was planning to see his brother, a doctor. His death was only weeks before John was born.

    As a young man, John came to Lowell, Iowa, working as a blacksmith. There he married Minerva Jane "Jennie" Tryer. Jennie ran a small hotel for a time in Lowell. Similarly, her father and stepmother operated a hotel for awhile.

    John died February 13, 1913, in Lowell. Jennie died February 8, 1934, also in Lowell.

      Abner (died 1921) and Alpha Thornburg's children were Harry (1885-1926), John, C.B. (Charrlie), Lloyd, Laura (Mrs. Lee) Pickle, and Mildred Fry. At the time of her death in 1950, Alpha Thornburg had forty grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Charlie Thornburg married Nettie Jones, daughter of William and Ionia Thompson Jones, and sister of Lloyd Jones. Children of Charlie and Nettie Thornburg were Burton [who] married Delilah Parsons and their children were Marilyn Buchholz and Marcia. Dayton and Janice Elder Thornburg's daughter was Trudy.

      Lloyd Thornburg married Anna Berry, daughter of Myron and Josephine Duke Berry, and their children were LaVern, Myron, Thomas, Dale, Harold, Edward, and Duane. Children of Lee and Laura Pickle were Florence Martin, Dorothy Blint, Hazel Blint, Joseph, Richard (Jack), Velma Weigert, James, Joyce Foster, Jean Tebbs, Gwen Lear, Karen Putnam, and Mary Gohr. Lyle Thornburg is John's grandson. Lyle married Shirley Hobart.
