    • Morning Sun Organizes a Fire Company
      May Offer Services to Farmers WIthin Radius of Four Miles.

      Morning Sun (IA), January 21 - (Special.) - At a meeting of a committee appointed by the American Legion of Morning Sun to organized a fire company, Glenn Huffman was elected fire chief Tuesday evening. Verne Blank was elected captain of the water and hose division, and Robert Morrison as lieutenant. Others chosen for this division were I. A. Gurge, Cliff McClurkin, Gene Bragg, Mark McClanahan, Ear Caparoon, Leonard Martin, Elgie Simpson, Clarence Wunnenberg, Robert Dickson, Ted Caproon, Harry Allen, and Delbert Hamilton, and to each one definite work was assigned.

      F. M. Courts was elected captain of the chemical division and Keith McClurkin lieutenant. Duties in this division were assigned to Merle Blair, Cal McElhinney, Harlan McDonald, Will Brown, Joe Schofield, and JOe Beck. The city council recently purchased a new chemical truck with a trailer attached for pulling the hose cart.

      Not only is Morning Sun now better equipped for handling fires than any similar town of its size in this part of Iowa, but it is reported that provided the council will give its consent the fire company will for a reasonable charge offer its services to farmers within a radius of three or four miles.. This will be decided later.

    • Curtis Dowell, Morning Sun is Killed in Auto
      Crash Sunday Night as Party Returns Home Proves Fatal

      Morning Sun (IA), November 18 - Curtis Dowell of this place, passed away about noon Monday at the Burlington hospital from injuries which he sustained in an automobile accident which occurred late Sunday night about a half mile northwest of Morning Sun.

      Five young men of this place were joy riding and when coming home the driver and owner of the car, Harry Allen, lost control of the machine, and it was thron into the ditch, wrecking it and injuring young Dowell to such an extent that he was rushed to the hospital. He had incurred concussion of the brain and his jaw bone was broken. Harry Allen had the skin torn from one side of his face and Frank Blair was slightly injured, while the other two occupants of the car were only well shake up.

      Dowell was about 34 years of age, the only son of Mrs. Emma Dowell of this place, with whom he made his home. Besides the mother, he leaves six sisters. His father was killed on the railroad here several years ago.

      Morning Sun (IA), June 6 - Morning Sun experienced one of the most severe electrical storms and heaviest rain of the season Friday (June 3, 1927). For more than an hour the lightning was terrific, telephone lines were put out of commission, the lights went out all over town.

      George Delzell's barn was struck by lightning which ripped the shingles from the roof, and split several of the 24 rafters. A tree near the Harry Allen home was struck and a light knocked from one of the windows. [...]

    The Hawk Eye 
    • Harry Allen, 92, Morning Sun, died Saturday, October 18, at Morning Sun.

      He was born in Roseville, Illinois, the son of William and Barbara Powell Allen. He married Lena Thompson on June 16, 1915, at Wapello. She died in January 4, 1975.

      Surviving are four daughters, Lela Taylor of Mathersville, Illinois; Betty Chappell of Canton, Michigan, Shirley Self, Sturgeon, Missouri, and Marjorie Williams of Galesburg, Illinois; three sons, Leroy (Bud) Allen of Washington, Robert Allen of Florence, South Carolina, and William Allen of Canton, Missouri; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

      The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Pierce Funeral Home in Monring Sun.

      Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Reverend Dick Clark officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
