    • Christmas Is Happiest Season For Veteran of Postal Service

With a smile and an extra heavy Christmas season mail bag, Frank A. T. Abrahamson, 400 Arthur, is preparing for his thirty-eighth year of postal delivery service. He began toting the malls In Amarillo, on December 15, 1910. Rain or shine, the mail has gone through on his route ever since.

When I came to Amarillo from Mediapolis, Iowa," Mr. Abrahamaon reminisced, "the fire station was just being built and I grabbed a paint brush and joined in.

Tiring of painting the building red, I took my examination for clerk-carrier in the summer of 1910. I was accepted, and I have been at it ever since,

My first service was to sit at a table in the lobby of the post office, which was then at 112 East Fifth, and weigh packages much the same as I am carrying today. Christmases used to be a lot heavier than they are now; at least the parcels were.

I stayed with weighing machines until 1915, and then I soloed on my own route. The trip was from Ninth to Seventeenth in the district between Van Buren and Jackson.

Early in 1918, Herbert M. Timmons left route No. 2 in the downtown business section. I took it over, and that has been my beat ever since. Boy, what a circus it has been.

Back in 1926, the boom broke out, and in a six-weeks period everyone went wild. One day I would carry mall down 15 blocks along Polk; the next day, I would be assigned to just one block. Nobody knew If they were coming or going, and that includes the trains, the people and the mail carriers.

Now the route is a simple matter. Office buildings and congested business space makes sorting child's play, and the day of hoofing all over to find some unmarked address, not yet erected, is no more, I make the best time I ever have in recent years, when a glance at the envelope tells me where the letter is going, and to whom.

These years have been fast for me. I belong to it, it's mine, I enjoy it every day so long as people keep smiling. Just remember, the postman need NOT ring twice," he concluded. From the horse and buggy days to jet propulsion, Mr. Abrahamson would still appreciate it if a better course in handwriting were offered to mailers in their youth.
