The Wedding Photograph of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
The Wedding Photograph of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
This photograph was provided courtesy of Dale Hubert Brumm. Walter and Ella Lett were married March 16, 1892, in Burlington, Iowa. In my own possession is a wedding certificate with photographs of them. Walter does not have a mustache in that photo and Ella would seem to be a bit older, so perhaps they were photographed later for their wedding certificate.

The Marriage Certificate of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
Walter and Ella Lett were two of my paternal great grandparents. They were both first generation Swedish children born to immigrant parents in the Mediapolis, Iowa, area. They were married March 16, 1892, in Burlington, Iowa. A wedding photograph that exists at that time shows Walter with a mustache and Ella looks to be a bit younger than she is on this photograph, so perhaps they "published" their wedding certificate a few years after the marriage.

Bertha, my grandmother, is pushing the baby carriage with her brother, Charlie in this photograph. Someone, likely my father, wrote "Charlie -- Mom" on the picture. The back of the photograph identifies "H. E. Sewell" as the photographer. Likely this was Harry E. Sewell, who was a neighbor of Hannah (Honson) Johnson, the children's grandmother, in 1900.

Dale Hubert Brumm kindly provided this photograph. On the left is a picture of him and probably two sisters (back to front): Helen Laverne, Dorothy Virginia, and Dale Brumm (children of Oliver "Clayton" and Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm). He theorized the man wearing the cap to be Walter Lett, but Walter would have been in his 60s by the time of this photograph (taken in the late 1920s). That man doesn't seem to be that old. These may have simply been friends in the neighborhood that day, as there are no other close family members who would have had so many young children at that time.

Bertha Leota Lett at About Age 12
This has been an unknown photograph in my paternal family collection for a number of years, but after studying it and comparing to photos in which the family members are identified, I am 90% certain it is of my grandmother, Bertha Leota Lett. It is, ultimately, unprovable as there is no identifying writing on the picture
Bertha Leota Lett Sitting at the Piano
Bertha Leota Lett Sitting at the Piano
The music on the piano is, "I'll Be Back, But I Got To Go Now." The back of the card says "1908, Bertha Leota Brumm (Grandma Brumm)." I don't know who wrote that, possibly my father for my benefit. Bertha is my grandmother, though, not his.
Bill Brumm, Bertha Brumm, and Bob Herman
Sitting on the couch in the home of Dorothy Virginia (Brumm) and Carl Harold "Harry" Herman are, left to right: William Lett "Bill" Brumm, his mother, Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm, and Bill's nephew, Bertha's grandson, Robert Paul "Bob" Herman. (At least one living or private individual is linked to this item - Details withheld.)
Oliver 'Clayton' and Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm
Oliver "Clayton" and Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm
A photograph taken the same day as another photograph in this series. I don't believe the house they are standing by is the same home in Mediapolis that I remember my grandfather living in, but possibly this was their home at the time.
Amanda (Lindberg) Herman and Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm
Amanda (Lindberg) Herman and Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm
This photograph of Amanda and Bertha was probably taken in October 1947 on the occasion of Carl Harold "Harry" Herman's funeral. He was killed in a firefighting accident. Amanda was his mother, Bertha his mother-in-law.
Five Women of the Mediapolis, Iowa, Presbyterian Church
Five Women of the Mediapolis, Iowa, Presbyterian Church
The back of this photograph identifies these women as Lucille Hutchcroft, Pearl Bailey, Aunt Nettie, Mayme Shutt, and Bertha Brumm.

More fully described, these women are: Martha "Lucille" (Vannice) Hutchcroft (1896-1979). Lucille was the wife of Clarence Arthur Hutchcroft and the grandmother of Deborah Sue Trevitt, who is married to Earl "Wayne" Lowe. (Earl is a great grandson of Charles Francis Walker, and is a maternal side relative. The others identified as relatives in this photograph are on my paternal family side.)

Margaret "Pearl" (Burgess) Bailey (1893-1983). Pearl was married to Glenn Ruble Bailey when this photograph was taken. Later she married my grandfather, Oliver "Clayton" Brumm, after the death of his wife, Bertha (far right, she died in 1953) and the 1950 death of her husband, Glenn.

Aunt Nettie is Nettie Marie (Johnson) Paddock (1885-1963), the daughter of Samuel Edmond and Hannah Marie (Honson) Johnson. Nettie was an aunt of Bertha Brumm (far right). She did not live in Mediapolis, and probably was visiting the day the photograph was taken.

I don't know for certain who Mayme Shutt is, but if she is Mary Shutt and "Mayme" is a nickname, she is Mary Francis (Friedemann) Shutt (1887-1976), who is the sister of Charles Friedemann, and her brother married Ruth Ellen Brumm.

Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm (1893-1953) was my grandmother, the wife of Clayton Brumm.
Kathleen Lucille Brumm and her mother, Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm
Kathleen Lucille Brumm and her mother, Bertha Leota (Lett) Brumm
Kathleen and her mother Bertha, taken in about 1950, perhaps close to the time of Kathleen's marriage to Alfred Clayton "Al" Erickson.
