    Marriage Fact
    • According to family genealogist Marjorie Kimble, for a time in the 1930s it was the "in" thing for sortheast Iowa people to do to go to Monmouth, Illinois, to get married. Sam and Betty Walker did this. Later people went to Kahoka, Missouri (Bill and Margaret Walker, for example). Still later couples went to Nashua, where "The Little Brown Church in the Vale" was located. Why these places were arbitrarily popular and chosen is unknown.

    The Hawk Eye
    • Tests stifled wedded bliss

In 1941, Burlington was a boom town. The economy was jumping. There were jobs for everyone.

So with good times here, why did the number of marriages in Des Moines County dwindle dramatically?

In 1940, 1367 marriage licenses were issued at the local courthouse. In 1941 there were but 567.

Were fewer people getting married? Had living in sin become socially acceptable?

No, said county officials. More likely the decline was the result of a new Iowa law requiring couples to have blood tests before being issued a license.

      J. D. Jackson, clerk of the district court, said it was likely couples were eloping, and the Hawk-Eye Gazette reported that "the parade of couples wishing to dodge the blood test now marches into Missouri" 40 miles away.

Not only did the "Show Me" state eschew blood tests -- it didn't even require a witness to the ceremony.

A Walker Family Reunion in About 1946
Based upon the ages of those who are children in this photograph, it was likely taken in about 1946. Several family members helped in its identification (I am a bit unsure about several of them). This photograph was provided courtesy of Carol Ann Kelley. Several persons could not be identified positively due to their placement or the overall quality of the photograph, and one child does not seem to fit at this date with family members, but generally it is correct.

Those who were at this reunion were: Gerald Wayne Kimble, Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, Verona Violet (Dotson) Walker, Leonard "Max" Dotson, Elaine Ida (Brown) Dotson, Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" Dotson, (Probably) Paul Eugene "Paulie" Umphrey Jr., Paul Eugene "Tubby" Umphrey Jr., Lois Ann (Thibodeau) Umphrey, Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker, Wilda Maxine (Walker) Thomas, Wilda "Marguerite" (Wyerman) Walker, Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker, Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker, William David "Bill" Walker, Doris Idella Walker, Thomas Clifford "Cliff" Walker, Mazie Ella Walker-Belles, Unknown (Possibly Vera Marie "Jakie" Walker), David Floyd "Dave" Howey, Margretta Mae (Umphrey) Howey, Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell, Ted L. This is a family reunion photograph, taken in 1949, of members of the extended Walker family of my maternal relatives. Several members of the Moyers family are also in this picture.

Those identified and not in this photograph are: Charles Leander "Lee" Walker, his wife, Aleta Marie (Hewitt) Walker, an unknown woman (sitting in the chair), Hattie "Leota" (Walker) Krekel (standing), holding an unknown baby, but it likely was 3-month-old Steven William "Steve" Walker, Ruth Aralene (Wheeler) Broeker, a woman with her back to the camera, possibly one of the Moyers' sisters, Caroline Ellen Moyers, Ethel Louise Moyers, William David "Bill" Walker, Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker, and Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell.
    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (1 of 3)
    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (1 of 3)
This reunion was evidently in the autumn or spring, as evidenced by the coats everyone is wearing. Many of the unknown people in this photograph are probably from the Frizzell family. If so, this reunion was one that was periodically held in Ottumwa, Iowa, considered halfway between the Osceola area where they lived and the Morning Sun area where many of the Walker family lived. If before 1951, the woman between Flossie Russell and Sam Walker was probably their sister, Everna Frizzell (the #9 person). Other photographs of her wearing a similar hat (that obscures her face, unfortunately) do exist.

A second photograph, nearly identical to this one, exists as well and is posted on this site. Additionally a third photograph, side view, of women at the reunion, exists and is posted.

Known family members included in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), George Percy Walker (1896-1985), William David "Bill" Walker (1918-1977), Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker (1869-1957), Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner (1897-1970), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker (1894-1976), Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958), and Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson (1903-1990).

The Former Home of William David "Bill" and Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker and Their Children, Steven William "Steve" and Gary Lynn Walker
This house located at 891 10th Street in Marion, Iowa, was where Bill, Margaret, and their children Gary and Steven Walker lived in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s; Bill had his sheet metal business in a building back behind the house (now removed). They had one of the only family cuckoo clocks I can remember in the 1950s, which was terribly fascinating to watch whenever we visited them. In their attic was a very nice old 1940s record player, too. The house is two blocks north of the Marion town square; at the time this photograph was taken in 2001, it could have used some tender lovin' care.

Thanks to Becky Murphy and Marge Kimble for providing this photograph.

    Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker
    Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker
Margaret Walker was the daughter and only child of Jerry Lesher and Mabel B. Price. She was born in Marion, Iowa, June 10, 1918, and died June 30, 2004, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I have traced Margaret's ancestry to her great grandparents, Henry Lesher (1836-1916), and Barbara Burger (1831-1912), both natives of Pennsylvania. Also in her family tree are great grandparents David Monn and Lydia Berger. A maternal grandfather, Robert D. Price, was from Georgia. His wife, Leora Ann, was born in Indiana.

The women who are presently known to be in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker (1914-1997), and Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958),

The older woman wearing the hat is probably Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell (who died April 27, 1951). Many of the other family members are likely her descendants, as I believe this was at an annual or periodic Frizzell/Walker reunion, likely in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson and Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner were in the other two photographs from this reunion, but are not visible in this one.

This photograph, taken by Robert Walker probably in summer 1956, was one of the annual Walker family picnics in Locust Grove Park, Morning Sun, Iowa. Those identified are back row, left to right: Leota Brumm, Margaret Walker, Reil Walker, the little girl on the left is unknown (as Bob Walker took the photo, perhaps it was his daughter, Janet), the girl on the right is Becky Kimble, Marge Kimble (face hidden), uncertain, and Flossie Russell. The front row on the blanket: Ruth Broeker, Beverly Marshall, Vera Virden, and Marguerite Walker.

This is another photograph taken during a family reunion I believe was in the summer of 1965 at the home of Bill, Leota, and Dennis Brumm in New London, Iowa. Margaret Walker was my aunt, and I was using our family Kodak Brownie camera, which took pretty miserable photographs, quite frankly. To the north of our house was a large hackberry tree, and it provided some respite from the hot and humid Iowa weather that afternoon. We had a very long driveway (and a very big lawn to mow), which was still filled with all of the relatives' automobiles. The houses across the street (South Pine Street) were, on the left, that of Harvey Morrow, and on the right, Helen Grinstead. It looks like the lawn was recently mowed from the "tracks" that are evident. One thing I remember from this particular day about Margaret was her son Steve once jokingly called her "Maggie," which I think was a nickname she didn't particularly care for. I never heard it used otherwise.

My aunt Margaret Walker was visiting our apartment on Main Street in New London, Iowa, in the summer of 1968 when I took this photograph. I was considered a pest with my Instamatic by numerous relatives that summer. I was going to be the New London High School yearbook photographer the next two years, and needed all the practice I could get.

This is one of two group photographs that exist which are provided courtesy of Marge Kimble of family members who attended a reunion in 1988 at the home of Shirley Lea (Broeker) and Norton Lawrence "Larry" Smith in Wapello, Iowa.

These people were: standing, left to right: Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker, Wallace Ernest "Wally" Broeker, Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker, Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker, and Marjorie Naomi "Marge" (Walker) Kimble

Sitting, left to right: Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, Doris Daisy (Frizzell) Cartwright, and Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" Dotson. It looks a bit as though someone may have been obscured behind Sam Walker, next to Wally Broeker.
