      Wapello (IA), April 18. -- A class of 23 will be graduated from the Wapello Consolidated school. The dates of the various events in connection with graduation have not yet been announced as it will be necessary to make up the three weeks lost because of road and flood conditions.

      Wapello, Iowa, June 8 -- The annual graduation of the Wapello consolidated school was held in the high school auditorium Thursday evening, and a class of 23 received diplomas. The Reverend B. G. Hanks gave the invocation and Arthur Springer, president of the school board, introduced the Reverend E. G. Williams, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian church, Des Moines, the speaker.

      Superintendent G. L. Troe presented the class, announcing Harriet Webster as honor pupil and Edward Vincent, second. Miss Webster's name will be engraved on the silver loving cup which was presented to the school last year.

      Other members of the class are: Lena E. Beard, Carol M. Bissinger, Donald C. Bissinger, Nellie Evelyn Blanchard, Marion H. Cover, Pauline Frances Crammond, Lillis H. Crow, James D. Dean (sic: Deam), Madeleine R. Drank, Clifford O. Gerth, Mildred Lucile McNatton, Burt Matthews, Ruth Minor, Freaman Reid, Mary E. Schwob, Jessie M. Syphrit, Edith Ione Wagg, Sam Walker, Elsie A.       Edward Vincent, president of the class, in behalf of the high school, presented Mr. Troe with a silver loving cup. The presentation of the diplomas by Arthur Springer closed the evening's program.

    • Wapello (IA) -- James Dotson Deam, 69, a former Wapello resident, died Tuesday, June 2, at the Morning Sun Manor.

      He was born in Louisa County, September 17, 1911, to Bert and Hallie Dotson Deam. He married Marian Yohe in Monmouth, Illinois, August 6, 1932; she died November 22, 1977.

      Mr. Deam was a lifetime resident of the Newport area and owned and operated a service station and tank delivery service there from 1935 to 1970. He farmed until he retired in 1977.

      Surviving: his mother, Wapello; three daughters, Mrs. Craig (Judith) Delzell, Burlington; Mrs. Kenny (Sylvia) Foor, Wapello; Mrs. Michael (Kathleen) Buster. Burlington; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

      Funeral: 2 p.m. Friday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello, Reverend Richard Smith; Bethel Cemetery at Wapello. A memorial has been established to Bethel Church Historical Site.

    Jimmy Deam was a childhood friend of Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker. Jimmy was the son of Robert S. "Bert" and Hallie Pauline (Dotson) Deam. Jimmy's great aunt, Barbara Deam, married Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Moyer(s), the son of Jacob Moyers and Sarah Walker "Sallie" Rogers. And finally, Jimmy's mother, Hallie Pauline Dotson, was a sister to Oscar Brown Dotson, the father of Ted Dotson and Verona (Dotson) Walker.

    Sammie (or "Sammy") Walker is on the right in this photograph with his friend, Jimmy Deam (1911-1981) on the left. Jimmy Deam was the son of Hallie Pauline Dotson (1889-1982) and Robert S. "Bert" Deam (1887-1959). His mother, Hallie, was a daughter of Mark Dotson, and a sister of Oscar Brown and Edith Virginia (Baxter) Dotson. Jimmy was a first cousin of Ted and Verona Dotson and their siblings. Jimmy's father's aunt, Barbara Deam (1840-1924) married Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Moyer; she was therefore a sister-in-law of Samuel Nelson Moyers.

    Judging from the height of the corn in the background, this photograph was likely taken in mid to late July.
