    • Double Grade A Milking Operation at Doton Acres Farm Near Morning Sun

Morning Sun (IA) -- Grade A dairy operations have nearly doubled this past year at the Dotson Acres farm located about four miles east and south of here along highway 61. The farm is owned by Mrs. Harry Dotson and in partnership with her is her son-in-law, Kenneth Baird, who operates a nearby farm.

Caring for the 60 head of Holsteins is Merle Kerr who has been working at Dotson Acres for a little over 10 years. Of the 60 head, there are 32 cows, being milked at the present lime with 21 dry cows, and heifers and seven calves.

      Expand Herd

The largest number to be milked this past winter was 38 head, nearly twice as many as were milked in the past. Up until last fall they had between 15 to 20 cows producing and then started to increase the herd.

According to Kenneth Baird, "At the time we started to expand, we were hardly filling the 175 gallon bulk tank, Then we had 16 heifers which freshened in the fall and we found ourselves needing a bigger tank."

They replaced the bulk tank with a larger, 375-gallon unit this past winter and the Holsteins are now producing between 7000 to 8000 pounds of milk per week. The milk truck from a Burlington dairy stops every other day to pick up the milk which is cooled to about 38 degrees Fahrenheit for storage. Baird said they are planning to increase the herd until they have about 40 cows milking, which would utilize the bulk storage tank to about capacity. "We will do some weeding out when the heifers freshen this fall," he said, telling of plans to keep "just the good producing cows.

      Milking Music

Chore time comes early at the Dotson Acres farm with Merle Kerr out milking about 4:30 in the morning and in the afternoon he takes the tractor out to the pasture to bring the herd in about 3 p.m. Two milking units keep time to music played over a radio mounted on a sill behind the cows.

There are nine stanchions in the barn which sparkles with clean white paint applied recently. While one group is being milked the rest wait in a loafing area at one end of the barn. The spic-and-span clean milk house is located at the other end of the barn.

An artificial breeding program is used at Dotson Acres, with the late Harry Dotson, who died last fall, being one of the first breeders in eastern Iowa to utilise such services.

In addition to caring for the dairy herd, Kerr has 21 head of cattle to feed and they raise about 250 head of hogs on the farm.

With the close operating margin in farming today cutting into profits, Baird had this to say about dairying, "It's the only thing that has paid off this past year." Another reason why the dairy herd has been expanded.
