The History of New London, Iowa
    • Hale

William Hale owned land in Section 13 of New London Township northeast of New London in 1840. He could have been the father of the Hales listed as farmers in Section 26 of Canaan Township in the 1879 History of Henry County, L. Hale, John D. Hale, and R. E. Hale (This is incorrect. He may have been a brother, but the father was Richard Hale of Pleasant Grove Township.)

Among the children of R. E. (sic: R.T.) Hale were Robert (R.E.), William, and Sherman. Robert married Fannie Bishop, and they were the parents of Pearl (Mrs. John Allen.) William Hale married Anna Tucker. William Hale, according to the New London Journal of April 2, 1931, had lived on the same farm for 65 years, and his son Ira (1882-1931) and family lived there, too.

Ira Hale married Florence Hand, and their children were Everett, who died in childhood, Ada (Mrs. Cecil) Venghaus, Vera (Mrs. Cecil) Miller, Woodrow, and Arlene. Ira Hale was accidentally killed when he went to check on his sheep one night, carrying a gun because of the dogs that had been bothering them. He fell, and the gun discharged, killing him. Ira's son, Woodrow Hale, married Freda Iles, and they reared their daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Dale) Blint and Wanda (Mrs. Jack) Wormington, the fourth generation, on the farm William Hale bought in 1888. Woodrow and Freda still live there.

Arlene Hale is listed in Who's Who of American Women as the author of dozens of books. She wrote poetry in the 1940s, then magazine articles, and about 1950 began writing books of light fiction, romances, and young people's books, many of them about nurses. She writes under her own name and several psudonyms - Gail Everett, Louise Christopher, and Lynn Williams.

John D. Hale married Sarah Lee, and their children were Levi, Will, Mary, Emma (Mrs. Thomas) Coad, and Anna (Mrs. Frank) Potter.

Levi Hale (1852-1922) was born near Mt. Union. He married Laura Lease (died 1936), the daughter of James W. (1832-1915) and Celia Willeford Lease. The Willefords were very early settlers in Henry County. James Lease was a Civil War soldier. Levi and Laura Lease Hale were the parents of John Arnold Hale and Nelli (Mrs. Arthur) McCosh.
