    The Hawk Eye 
    • Thomas E. Thornburg, 85, of Oakville died Saturday, November 3, 2007, at his home.

      Born June 2, 1922, in Henry County, he was the son of Lloyd E. and Anna Berry Thornburg. On August 3, 1946, he married LeAnna Marie Willis at Cheyenne, Wyoming. She died June 19, 2006.

      Mr. Thornburg was a conductor for more than 40 years for railroads including the CB&Q, Burlington Northern and Amtrak. He attended Salem school. He served in the Army as a medic during World War II. He served as mayor of Oakville and also was a township trustee.

      He was a member of United Transportation Union of Galesburg, Illinois, and American Legion at Oakville. He enjoyed woodworking, farming, gardening, traveling, playing cards and instigating practical jokes.

      Survivors include 11 children, Kathleen Hardin of Russell, Martha Johnson of Mediapolis, Virginia Thornburg of Great Falls, Montana, Michael Thornburg of Mount Pleasant, Janet Cross of Wapello, Peggy Ball of Wapello, Gayle Donnolly of Mount Pleasant, Paula Thornburg of Olds, Jackie Stineman of Oakville, Patrick Thornburg of Clarence, and Joel Thornburg of Marengo; 20 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Duane Thornburg of Burlington.

      Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.

      Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, where family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

      The funeral for Mr. Thornburg will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, with Reverend Scott Smith officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Edwards Cemetery at Oakville. Afterward, family and friends will gather at Oakville Community Building for a lunch and fellowship.

      Memorials have been established for Oakville Responders, Wapello Community Ambulance Service, Old Pilot Grove Cemetery Preservation Group and Great River Hospice.
