    • Lawrence Emilius Parish, 88, Wapello, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington. The son of Emilius E. and Susie Wade Parish, hew as born March 28, 1915, at Granger, Missouri.

      The family moved to Wapello in 1923. He graduated from Wapello High School in 1933. He married Margaret Louise Heins on June 28, 1933, at Kahoka, Missouri.

      He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wapello, a 65-year member of Louisa Lodge #19 I.O.O.F. of Wapello and past member of its Grand Lodge finance committee, a 50-year member of the VFW Glenn Allen Post #5166 of Wapello, a member of the Louisa County Historical Society, a member and one of two remaining organizers of the Southeast Iowa Antique Car Club, and a 30-year- member of the Wapello Volunteer Fire Department, serving as chief for five years.

      He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II having served in the Pacific Theatre as a radar man on an aircraft carrier.

      He was one of a group that started the Indian Hills Golf and Country Club that he then managed for thirteen years. He was the third certified Golf Course Superintendent in Iowa. He enjoyed antique cars and woodworking, spending much of his time in his shop. He had his pilot's license and flew for many years. He was a local Boy Scout leader for many years and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service with the Southeast Iowa Boy Scout Council.

      He is survived by his wife, Wapello; three sons, Dean and Gladys Parish of Wapello; Jerry and Linda Parish of Pinellas Park, Florida, and Ralph and Pat Parish of McAllen, Texas; a daughter, Peg and Ron Hunt of Burlington; eleven grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Diane McConohay; two grandchildren, Steven and Stephanie Parish; a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Bessine; four brothers, Raymond Parish, Oval Parish, Clovis Parish and Newton Parish; three sisters, Sara Parish, Clara Deppey and Elma Syphrit.

      The funeral service for Lawrence Parish was at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the Wapello United Methodist Church with the Reverends Harlan W. Winter and Chris Thomas officiating. Organ music was provided by Bev Parsons.

      Burial of the cremated remains followed at the Wapello Cemetery with military rites by the Wapello VFW. Honorary bearers were Mike Parish, Donald Parish, Scott Parish, Todd McConahay, Ramsey Nelson and Jay Parish.

      The family met with friends Thursday evening at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

      A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello United Methodist church.
