    • A surprise party was held in Mildred "Shorty" Thie's honor last Saturday. Shorty is retiring after over fifty years of being a beauty shop operator. Above: Joyce Hollingsworth, Shorty's daughter, cuts the cake, as Shorty and her two great-granddaughters watch.

Mildred "Shorty" Thie has retired from her beauty shop business after half a century of service. Shorty closed the doors at Thie's Beauty Shop on Wapello Street on April 1.

"I thank my God that he's given me the health to be able to work all these years," Shorty stated.

Last Saturday, April 8, over 80 people filled The Haven in New London in her honor. The gathering was a surprise party organized by a group of family and friends: her daughter - Joyce Hollingsworth, and friends - Harriet Kennedy, Darlene Stevens, and Elnora Wilson.

"Harriet invited me to go to lunch two weeks prior to the party," stated Shorty of how they got her there.

Shorty did not know of the surprise before hand. "Harriet told me during the party "they always say that everybody knows everybody's business in a small town, but this time that isn't true," Shorty told the NEWS.

Shorty, a Mediapolis native, has been a beauty shop operator for over fifty years, beginning her training in beauty school during World War 11. After school, she opened a beauty shop in Burlington with her sister, Thelma (Pilling) McMurry.

The business then moved to the bank building on Main Street in Mediapolis.

"Tom Schulte and I started working at about the same time," stated Shorty. They've also both retired at about the same time, staying friends along the way. Schulte retired from full-time work at the Mediapolis Savings Bank at the end of March.

"I just want to add that every good trait he has, he got from his mother," Shorty added.

There was a ten year gap between closing up shop on Main Street and opening a shop at her home on Wapello Street. Before retirement, she had been cutting hair at her home for over twenty years. The years were so busy she always had an additional person helping her.

Her husband Hick added, "She's a workaholic, busy from five a.m. to six p.m. six days a week."

Last September, Shorty began struggling with arm and shoulder pain. It was then that she made the decision to retire in April of 1995.

"I've met great people," Shorty stated. "It was never difficult to start out working for the day because I had so much fun."

Her husband, Hick, retired a while back. "I just want to say thank you people for letting me have my wife back again."

Future plans for the couple include enjoying their home and family.

"Again, I want to say thanks to all the people that have made my business so successful," Shorty said.
