    History of Louisa County, Iowa, From Its Earliest Settlement to 1911 
    • George R. Deihl, who has lived retired in Wapello since 1896, was successfully identified with general agricultural pursuits throughout his active business career and is still the owner of five hundred acres of valuable land in Louisa county. His birth occurred in this county on the 27th of October, 1857. his parents being John and Margaret (Jamison) Deihl, the former a native of Franklin county, Pennsylvania, and the latter of Ohio. John Deihl, who was born on the 21st of November, 1808, came to Louisa county, Iowa, in 1836, purchasing and locating on a tract of land comprising one hundred and sixty acres. He won a gratifying measure of prosperity in the conduct of his agricultural interests and added to his holdings by purchase from time to time until at his death he owned twelve hundred acres of rich and productive land. In 1845 he visited his native state on horseback, riding via Chicago. When he passed away on the 16th of September, 1878, the community mourned the loss of one of its most substantial and esteemed citizens.

      George R. Deihl attended the common schools in the acquirement of an education and at the time of his father's demise took charge of the home farm, which later came into his possession. The further cultivation and improvement of that property claimed his attention throughout his active business career and his undertakings as an agriculturist were attended with excellent results. He still owns five hundred acres of well improved land--all under a high state of cultivation. In 1896 he put aside the active work of the fields and removed to Wapello, where he has since lived in honorable retirement. He has, however, made several trips west to the coast and has also sojourned in the east. Mr. Deihl is a stockholder and director of the State Savings Rank of Wapello.

      On the 1st of January 1880, Mr. Deihl was united in marriage to Miss Eva E. Dotson, native of Louisa county and a daughter of Basil and Mary (Davison) Dotson, who were born in Pennsylvania and England respectively. They came to this county in 1844 and here spent the remainder of their lives. Mr. Dotson passing away in March 1872, while his wife was called to her final rest in April 1896. Their union was blessed with fourteen children, seven of whom are yet living. Mrs. Deihl was the youngest member of the family. By her marriage she has become the mother of five children, as follows: Blanch A., the wife of Stephen Pandel, of Louisa county; John D., the cashier of the State Savings Bank of Wapello; J. Ross, who was graduated from business college and is now an employe of Armour R. Company of Chicago; Frank W., who is now a high school student; and Margaret M.

      In politics Mr. Deihl is a republican and his fellow townsmen have chosen him for public office. He has ably served on the board of supervisors and has been connected with the school board for fifteen years. Both he and his wife are well and favorably known throughout the county in which they have spent their entire lives, the circle of their friends being almost coextensive with the circle of their acquaintances.

      Lifelong Resident of Community Succumbs in Wapello; Funeral Tuesday.

      Wapello (IA)., June 20 -- G. R. Deihl, retired farmer and a lifelong resident of this county, passed away Sunday morning at 8 o'clock, death being due to pneumonia.

      George R. Deihl, son of Margaret Jamison and John Deihl, was born in Louisa county, Iowa, October 27, 1857. He attended the common schools and at the time of his father's death in 1878 took charge of the home farm which later became his own, and he was one of the most successful farmers in this community. In 1896 he retired from the farm and moved to Wapello which has since been the family home.

      Mr. Deihl married Miss Eva E. Dotson, January 1, 1889 (sic: January 21, 1880), and to this union five children were born, all of whom with the wife and mother survive. The children are Mrs. Blanche Pantel, Wapello, John D. Deihl, Grinnell, J. Ross Deihl, Chicago, Frank W. and Mrs. Marguerite Allen, residing on farms near Wapello. Mr. Deihl was a member of the board of supervisors and the school board for many years and held other public offices. He is also survived by a brother, Merritt Deihl, living near Wapello, and a sister, Miss Elizabeth Deihl, of Morning Sun.

      Funeral services will be held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, and burial will be in the Wapello cemetery.

    • Wapello (IA), August 25. -- The seventh annual reunion of the Davison and Dotson families was held at Chautauqua park in Mediapolis Saturday, with 118 present. The event was featured by a picnic dinner at the noon hour, ice cream and watermelons being served. The afternoon was spent with sports and contests.

      During the business session, officers for the coming year were elected as follows: Mrs. George R. Deihl, Wapello, president; I. M. Jamison, Morning Sun, vice president; Mrs. Henry Meyerholz, Wapello, secretary and treasure; committee on grounds and arrangements: W. D. Peters, W. S.
