    • [...] John Stafford married a Wright girl, and Will Weller married her sister. Smith Prickett married Kate, a sister of Will Weller. Carrie Pricket and Sam Weller, a brother of Will and Kate, were married at Grandfather Prickett's home, which was in Henry county. Mr. Charles Weller, a justice of the peace and uncle of these young Wellers, married them. The other three couples lived in Des Moines county, and Mr. Charles Weller, a very highly respected man, performed the ceremony on the same day he married Carrie Prickett and Sam Weller, but he married them in Des Moines county. Mr. Charles Weller did not realize until the next day that Des Moines county was not in his jurisdiction, and that the three marriages were illegal.

It had rained and the roads were almost impassable, but he, being very conscientious, mounted his horse and started out to rectify his error. He met the three couples in a big wagon on their way to Grandfather Prickett's and after ascertaining that they had crossed the Henry county line, he, sitting on his horse and they, all standing up in the wagon, were pronounced, each of them, man and wife. That story was told for years. These Wellers were cousins of the Will Weller who married Mellie Roberts and whose children were Ernest, Curtis, Frank, and Edna. I remember them when they were first married. She was very pretty, and she wore gray, trimmed with blue, and her hat corresponded, and all of it became her. Will Weller was very devoted to her. Will Weller was [?] close, but had a staunch character, and would not countenance anything that would not countenance anything that fell short of his standards. [...]
